Thanks Cole, I don't go anywhere near those loads.
The smaller plug would be great, but I'm assuming that won't help existing conversions?

Wouldn't the pressure be contained in front of the breech plug in the barrel area? This would also be the case in a bolt gun. When using a pressure trace is the set up the same on a cartridge gun and a smokeless ML? I always thought the sensor would be over the powder area in a ML and over the cartridge area in a conventional gun.
My Encore only weighs 7# 3oz so a 60gr sabot load is as much as I can stand, but I never considered it unsafe.

I think part of owning a smokeless break action is accepting it's limits. I thought long and hard about my options before building, and part of the compromise I accepted was that to get the short length and light weight I wanted, I would have to shoot the lighter saboted loads. For me it's been worth it. Though I have recently gotten the itch to build a bolt action.

I thought about doing a smokeless break open, My end goal was to come up with a really light fast swinging gun that handled well in a blind or tree stand. Wheni I did the math on the cost of the conversion vs shooting BH209 the choice was really simple. Bh209 and its lower pressures won out for me,.

Word on the street is that there may be a small diameter plug coming soon for anyone that is concerned. That is correct, they will be 9/16, full length thread, with a bushing versus a vent liner. I am putting one in a savage & Remington. If your guns are threaded for a savage plug it will NOT interchange. {OF COURSE} jeff~

Sounds like an SMI plug.

SNIP. I would think anything that can handle some of the loads that the Ruger #1 uses would also accommodate all or most of the loads used in smokeless shooting. IMO, for that to be true you need to compare the diameter of the cartridge and the BP! Let's compare say a .458 Lott with the end diameter at 0.481 and the end of a Savage BP at 0.605 Hmmm they don't seem the same to me and that is the actual BP not the hole you drilled to accept it! In QL the .577 Tyrannosaur cartridge is pretty close dimensionally to the Savage plug...IMO ask a barrel maker if they would chamber your H&R for that cartridge but necked down to a .458 with the standard contour and see what they say. edge. I guess the bottom line is if you're using a factory barrel with a smaller contour keep the loads on the light side.
and even if you do have a bolt gun with a robust and long chamber area.... use due diligence in loading also don't use your ram rod for spear practice and no show and tell time on the shooting range.
Good info on this board for sure.
I'd still like to see something done about those scope mount holes. Mention was made of a low temp weld at one time

Either the Encire or Apex action will do. Then order a 30 inch Krieger barrel (we just got our .416 Krieger barrels in three months-- but .45 barrels may take longer for some reason) and have Jeff Hankins or meyers129 put a Hankins ignition system in it. Make the barrel the thickest contour possible for 5 inches past the end of the plug, and have Jeff weld on a quality stainless scope base. You can then shoot loads tested by Earnhardt.

I was actually going to spend the money on a custom smoker. I'm one of the weird ones here but I actually enjoy the smoke and smell of BP and subs. What I didn't have time for was all the cleaning. Now I can shoot and if something comes up that I don't get it cleaned for a few days, no biggie. That in itself was worth the cost. And I love how my Encore turned out.

I chose the H&R as a light, carry rifle and thus, use a light load. Up to 35g VV-110 195g/200g bullets. Keep the heavier loads for the Savage. I don't consider the lighter break opens as heavy load guns.
