Just picked up a 223 bolt gun. Twist is 1 in 9. First loads were 55 gr. Ballistic Tips and 50 gr. Blitzkings, both with 25 grs. of Benchmark. Results were just OK. You guys have any "pet loads" for this set up? Thanks

I don't shoot anything under 69gn in the .223 but I would think Benchmark, H335, H4198, etc would all do just fine with the light bullets. You might try upping your loads some while watching for pressure and see if things tighten up. I feel like 25gn is on the lower side of data for that combo and I usually get best results in my .223 when loads are a little warmer but that is based on 69-77gn bullets and RL15.

A load that works good in my 1:9 AR is 25g Benchmark pushing a 55g tipped Varmageddon. Another load is the same bullet pushed by 28g CFE 223.
Another load utilizing a heavier bullet, that may, or may not work in your rifle is a 65g Sierra GameKing, pushed by 25.4g CFE 223. This load works good in my 1:9, and my 1:7 AR.

I only varmint hunt with my savage bolt 223. 26gr of Varget and a 55gr Vmax is a proven load.

If you can find any 60 Vmax they shoot pretty well with a case full of Varget(26-26.3gr) your 9T should handle these pretty well.

Sorry, late to the game. But... Pic says it all except 0.006" off rifling. Savage is 1 in 9" twist. Shoots the same with 55 grain VMax or Winchester bulk 55 softpoints.

Very impressive shooting . Chris Thanks. Nice thing is that was the first load I tried. Ended up bumping up to an even 22.0 grains IMR 4198 with the 50 grain VMax and shot 21.8 with the 55 grain bullets. That rifle shoots much better than I can hold it. But sometimes I have a pretty good day holding it.

Compressed load of Varget with 55gr bullet and never looked elsewhere. Varget is compatible with numerous calibers like the 308. Also like the fact of good velocity under max pressure. The only difficulty is getting my hands on more.

The 55gr flatbase bullets shot well for me at 100yds but beyond and in the wind the 69gr SMKs ruled. I think it was with around 25grs of Varget. Then I was getting the Black Hills blue box loaded with the 69gr SMK for like $18.45 a 50rd box and it was just as accurate as my handloads so I stopped handloading for the AR. Of course that was before Obama got into office and ammo prices went crazy.
With the 1:9 I had it seemed if you went heavier then 70gr you had to have some heat and the 77-80gr bullets didn't work well for me and then less then 50gr bullets seemed a waste of time. Flatbase bullets seemed to do better at 100yds compared to boattails. Almost like the longer boattails didn't get fully stabilized at 100yds.
I liked using the Varget because it was a case full. The only other powder I tried was 4895.

My shooting buddy Bill and I used to shoot at a public range and I had gotten a savage 10 FP in 223 cal. Every time I would shoot it someone there wanted to buy it, including Bill. I still have it but don't shoot it that much anymore. Couple years ago I won a 300 yd egg shoot with it shooting 40 gr BT with IMR 4198. Yule: I would go up with the benchmark in .2 gr to see what it will do with a little more powder. The 223 is like a 308 it shoots well with about any powder you put in it.Over the years I have tried a bunch of different powders and bullets. This is pic of the 55 gr bullet at 300 yds using benchmark. Next is a 69 gr sierra and varget.#1 was aiming point for 2 thru 6.I like to shoot at bullet holes. Next is trying a couple different loads with the 75 a-max and BTHP,with the 1-9 twist I didn't know if they would shoot or not but gave them a try.

My match load from an 18" AR15 with mid -length gas and 1-8" twist loaded at mag length: This load will hit steel hard enough to expose flapper out to 700m.

Same gun but with 69gn Nosler over 24gn RL15. This was my load for the old barrel I just swapped. First time shooting them for a postal match type challenge (2 x 10-shot group) was yesterday:
