Hi, I inherited a Savage 10ML-II (my my father in-law passed). I don't think this gun has ever been fired, but I do not have a breach plug wrench to tear it dowm. Any help and tidbits is much appreciated, looking forward to many hunting seasons with this.

Welcome timothymattson! Kinda limited info in your post. Do you have any experience with smokey MLs? Are you a hunter and target shooter? Have you ever hand loaded ammo? Where are you located, region, state etc... as that gives idea of regulations you have to deal with. Is the gun stainless or blue, wood/laminated stock or composite. Did any of the paperwork come with the rifle? Any bullets/sabots/primers/powder or other items like allen wrenches etc...? You have come to the right place to get the correct start but need to know more about the rifle and where you are starting or do you have experience?
You won't get flamed here. The members will help and try to get you going and be successful. We were all newbies at one time. If you don't understand the acronyms used or references just ask. Use the search feature and scroll through the pages and pages of threads. Much to learn here. Remember that safety is 1st!
What kind of breech plug does it have, one that takes a socket or the eared tool. Do you have any idea of the era when it was made?
Again welcome! best to you, 10 ga

If your breech plug is the type that need the prongs to fit? You can probably get one from Savage. Some have modified a socket with a grinder. You might also put a post on the for sale/wanted section and find one. Richard

I went to the Savage website and using the serial number found the wrench, there currently out of stock but should have some in a few weeks. The gun is blued, not stainless steel and has a black composite stock. I have a Leupold 4x12 just waiting for a home, a bit of over kill but it will do. I live in South East Michigan, hunt but locally and up north (UP). More of hunter but do some target shooting. I hunt with it all, rifles, pistols, archery - last year for ML season I used a CVA 209 black powder pistol and an 1858 New Army Revolver pistol, needless to say I had to pass up on some deer (out of range). I plan to use smokeless powder, assuming I can ever find any in stock. What brands and charges do you all find most accurate?

Assuming 50 cal. 5744 will work and you should be able to find it locally. Southern MI you will want to use Blackhorn 209 powder for gun season and ML season as well as northern MI for the ML season there but the smokeless is fine up north for rifle season.

Yes, he made contact and is sending it my may - thank you! My place up north is in Grayling, my good friend lives in West Ishpeming, he has an 80 acre camp south west of that. Did not deer hunt a whole lot up there this year as we both drew bear tags and spent our vacation time hunt blackies, we both scored with our bows!
