Want to add one of these to my laminated ML. Want to go with the 1" decelerator. Did a search and found lots of good info but looking at Pachmayr website it looks like the pad comes in 3 sizes. Just curious if anybody knows which size requires the least amount of modification?

Grinding a pad is not easy.. So grinding a little or a lot really makes no difference. You do need to get the smallest size that still overlaps your stock. Measure your stock and buy accordingly.. If you get it to big you will grind through exposing the inner steel structural insert. Then you will have to start over...
You will most likely grind into the original finish on your stock so plan on refinishing it while you doing the pad install..
You will need a belt sander with an 80, 120, 220 grit belt.. Sand (grind) the pad down a little at a time until you are happy with the fit.. If you don't want to refinish the stock then double wrap it with masking tape and grind till you hit the first layer of tape, then stop... You will be able to feel a small edge when finished but this will save you from getting into the woods finish
My favorite pad is the B550. (I think that's the #) the basket weave is attractive and functional.
Jeff..

It's worth doing once but you will find it indeed is not fun at all! If you mark the pad around the stock then rough grind it freehand it will save you a lot of time. You can take the masking tape around he stock and then use a Dremel with a sanding cylinder on it to get you really close, you will eat a lot of rubber this way though.... Then take the pad off and give it a good rub down on 400 and 600grit paper with wd40 and it will look just like when the stock companies do it(probably better).
We need more info on what your stock is but generally you can find a template for grind to fit recoil pad sizing.

Go to midway USA and they have a video showing how to put on a recoil pad. Are you using a 1 inch pad to help with recoil, or to lengthen the stock? If you are not wanting the stock to be an inch longer it will need to be cut off before adding the pad and this will change the pad size a little bit. Its not that hard to do, just take your time and you will be fine.

One thing that helped me was putting the pad in the freezer. This helps to firm up the rubber for grinding. I left it over night and then ground until it started to become pliable. Threw it back in and let it firm up again. Takes time but does help. Just my 2 cents!

Not to hijack your thread, but I was thinking about changing out the recoil pad on my Boyds thumbhole Encore stock. Is the Pachmayr a better option than the Limbsaver or Kickeez?

I was wondering the same thing I can't say if Pachmayr is bether than the others or not, but Pachmayr is what I have on all my Boyd's stocks and I really like them. They came on the 3 B&C stocks I have and I really liked them, so that's why I chose to add them to all my Boyd's stocks when ordering them. JMO tho, others may vary.

The Pachmayr pads finish better IMO. The Kickeeze is straight Sorbothane which if it catches a wiff of some solvents will start to breakdown to a sticky goo. Limbsaver uses a simular material but is overmolded with another rubber, still if it gets a wiff of some solvents it also will breakdown and leak. Limbsaver has a new pad out called Airtech which is supposed to have cured the goo problem.

I used a kick eez and it was a pain to grind down.. Also it waned to pull away from the backing pad in spots.

I did not like my Kickeze recoil pads, the Decelerator was not difficult to work with.

You stated that your gunsmith has your gun, he is most likely set up to fit your recoil pad and that might be your best choice in the long run. Just trying to help out: good luck with this project.

I have used all the mentioned pads and the decel pad would likely be your best option. The sorbothane pads might take a little more bite out but they also are less durable..I don't remember the # on the decel pad I use for the savage stocks but as mentioned take a measurement and order accordingly.
