Well we got up to our hunting spot after a wild ride pulling the Snow cow. The Highway was nasty so we took the back roads, they were not any better. The access to the fishing access was drifted in. SO we just dumped the Polaris and parked along side the road. Hooked up the "Old mans sled" and took off in the dark.
You can't go "free stile" but there is a ton of BLM two tracks around the area and we stuck to them. NO one had been out here for weeks. We ended up ON the lake and covered some impossible to access BOR land . Called , and called and were able to make a set every 1/2 hour, or so That's a LOT of sets, and a lot of putting on and taking off he snowshoes .
EVERY set we had coyotes calling back but they were NOT coming in. We did how ever have rabbits at them all. If the bunny stayed to listen to our half hour serenade we shot it...
Set after set, nutten but a rabbit for the bucket.
Noon came and the wind switched to the other direction, so we slipped back up to the truck for lunch and head the other end of the lake.
We get back to find a BIG Toyota with chains on all four, sitting high and dry on the drift that we didn't try .
BOY was this guy and his wife GLAD to see us. Apparently the had come in shortly behind us and promptly stuck there truck. And had been working on it since, for four hours.
My boys little 4 cylinder Toyota was just a little under gunned but, we hooked out tow strap to his tow strap and Started tugging, 40 minutes later and he was back on the ground and waving good by. His wife said we saved his 35 year marriage...
There is a little good Jewjew.
Anyway we called till dark, all the same ,dogs talking back. If was not for the cotton tails we would have drawn a blank.
I did find out even though the 52 gr Berger bullets were ok for coyote fur they where way plenty on bunnies . They would literally de-head them and pull the guts out with it, messy!!
But with potatoes, mushrooms, onion, Anaheim pepper, and cream gravy all over home made buttermilk biscuits, made for a WONDERFULL breakfast.!
