I just ordered my first chronograph. It is a Caldwell and seems to have a lot of good reviews. For my first one, I thought this would be a good start. It comes with a cord that hooks to your smartphone.
It has the display on the front of the unit. Do you guys have any suggestions on protection for the display from sabots?

You can do a few different things. A very easy way is to get everything lined up 1st. I like to put the chrony on a 2 x 6 platform on some sort of solid surface. Then I simply use a piece of firewood about the same height of the chrony and put it in front of the display. Works great.
If you mount your chrony on a tripod, you can take a 1/2" thick piece of plywood approx 12" wide and approx 40" tall and add to "legs" to it so you can make it stand up. I've used the fingers from old leather gloves to make easy, sloppy "hinges" and used drywall screws to attach the fingers. Then, simply get your chrony set up and use the plywood and legs to form a sort of tripod that you can keep spreading the legs until it's the right height. The top of the plywood should obstruct the view to the face of the chrony and be 6-12" in front of it.
Others here have gotten very elaborate with their concepts but it's fairly easy and simple to rig something up with stuff laying around the garage.
A sabot 15 feet from the muzzle will destroy your chrony!

I cut a piece of 1/4" plexiglas or lexan, not sure which it was now. I cut it longer than the chronograph, then heated it with a torch and bent the ends down at an angle so that the front is protected but sabots are angled up and away if they do strike the protector. For the diffusers I drilled holes at an angle and epoxied arrow inserts into the plex. Light and functional and I can read the display from the bench which is a must for use at the range.

after breaking about 4-5 of those style and getting tired of the setup back and forth to get it centered between the bench and target, I finally got a magnetospeed.

Never heard or read about anyone regretting getting a Magnetospeed for all the above reasons. However, the first model was too expensive and they have now gotten rediculously so. They need some competition.
