Jeff First u must make sure it is an SB2 frame . They made an SB1 , shot gun and some rifle calibers , SB@ being the rifle frame u can tell by serial number or if stock is off it will be honey comb . The barrel program from H&R is NO LONGER so ur options r limited . Go Graybeard outdoors classified sections u can usually find some 45 / 70 barrels there . But they made not fit tightly so a little work will be needed . hope this helps

With the barrel program being being phased out at HR we may have to build our own. I have a detailed blueprint drawing of the lug for HR NEF barrels in my file cabinet. I will try to figure out how to scan and post it in the next few days.Ray.

That would be awesome and open up the custom barrel option on these nice simple designs and keep them alive .....Remington is discontinuing the Handi and single shot shotguns but keeping the china made pump and autoloader so im told .....

I don't know and correct me if I'm wrong but based on the pictures in this link the SB1 frame looks to be a stronger configuration??

its not it was found to stretch more from my readings about this. thats why remington stopped doing barrel replacements on that frame for centerfire . Graybeard outdoors has a whole section dedicated to the h&R with more Gentlemen that know about these guns than the factory does there is even a guy that is a gunsmith at ilion that frequents the site .

Jeff,
Yes, the H&R/NEF barrels and frame are for the most part fully interchangeable. The tolerances can be slightly different from one rifle to the next, but a H&R barrel can be interchanged with a NEF frame, and vice versa.
The SB1 (Shotgun/Huntsman) frame is sand cast, and the SB2 (Center Fire Rifle) frame is investment cast and hardened. The SB2 though skeletonized around the stock bolt mounting is the much stronger frame to accommodate breech thrust from higher center fire rifle pressures.
For a muzzleloader that is going to have a threaded breech plug, either one of the frames are fine. There is no breech thrust, only recoil.
My Slufoot conversion is mounted up to a Huntsman SB1 frame, and is not a problem. With the breech plug there is no cartridge case trust into the standing breech, so no worries.
I have 10 of these H&R/NEF rifles, shotguns, and muzzleloaders.
