Well, it was raining like cats and dogs when I got ready to start shooting and continued for about the first fifteen shots or so. Continued to drizzle pretty much the rest of the morning.
I started off shooting a load and bullet I had never shot before. And, to boot, I started shooting it at 300 yards. My gun had been sighted in for a dead on 100 yd. impact with the 200 gr. XTP and 56 gr. H-4198. This load was the 200 SST and 66 gr. H-322 along with the BH (blue harvester) (on all my loads). It produced two sub MOA groups. Not too bad. I shot the last three shots of ten I had loaded at 100 yards and produced a 1.3" group. Just OK! The rain seemed to be playing havoc with my chronograph and some of the readings are up for dispute
Then went to the Ole' standby of 56 gr. H-4198 and the 200 SST. It put five shots in .935" (shots 1 & 2 are a slightly oblong one holer). I then shot the same combination at 300 yards and put the first three shots in 2.7". Not bad also.
This next load was a real "eye opener!" Again, a new load for me.
It was a duplex using the 200 XTP with 10 gr. of N-110 as the starter and 60 gr. of N-130 as the main charge. WOW! The first shot at 100 yards (I had just made a scope adjustment to bring POI down to dead center) registered 2880 fps. It felt like a pretty stiff load, but with the moisture on the chrono, did not really believe it was that high for a 23" barrel. But look at the succession of shots on my sheet. Other than one shot that loaded somewhat tight, five of six shots averaged 2874 fps with an extreme spread of only 18 fps.!!! So anyway, shots 2 and 3 form a nice cloverleaf of .935". Note: this XTP has been ;D modified to hold a standard steel BB (I drill the nose slightly and press in the BB). I only had prepared five of these bullets. Rather than firing a five shot group at 100, I decide to shoot at 300. Shots one and two are 1/2" CTC. Since I did not have anymore of that bullet, I substituted another slightly different modified bullet for shot three. After seeing that 1.8" group I felt just like dave d.................I blew it
Here is a load that gives me not only speed for my shortened barrel, but accuracy. Obviously, I will be playing a lot more with similar combinations. Probably using some N-133 and varying amounts of starter powders.
