I actually voted earlier but did not give a reason as asked. Then there were two for Brux but it is down to one now. As bestill said maybe it did not count or whatever. In any event I will revote and give an explanation. Explanation first. My vote is with Brux. It appears the most consistent to me overall and it has been the most accurate of the barrels on paper but on deer they are all capable. One thing also I was able to get it much sooner than the Krieger.

Doubt if any of us would want someone shooting at us at 300yds using any of those barrels.
My vote went to Brux because it was the most accurate ML barrel I've ever had. However, all of us have at least somewhat different life experiences in muzzle loading. Jeff has proven that the Kriegers will shoot amazing one hole groups. And I imagine the PacNor is ahead in this pole at this time because that's what most people have, and they are very accurate. But that's not to put down any of the others, either.

PacNor but as others have stated all I've shot. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, I have shot 4 of the brands in various centerfires and they all will shoot sub moa and better than I can, but I'm a hunter and if it hits what I'm shooting at that's all that matters to me.

Kind of a hard one to answer.................I checked Krieger because I shot my 1,000 yard record group with it. On the other hand, I am now shooting a Brux in 600 yard competition and doing real well with it. Herman shot a .778" five shot group with the Brux barrel I put on his gun. They both shoot very well......................Yet, in the past I did well in short range with (not listed)a Hart barrel in PPC? I think any of the major custom barrels can be competitive..........some more than others? Some shooters that shoot well with a particular barrel are also good trigger pullers to start with. I think that by and large these days, most long range shooters are shooting Cut Rifled barrels from either Krieger, Brux or Bartlein. As for muzzle loading, I have only used PN. Shot some test groups (customer guns) with McGowan's and they were also good. Richard

I have owned one (or more) of every barrel on the list except Brux. I have only used Douglas and McGowen so far for SML although I have a Burx on order. Between the Douglas and McGowen for SML I voted Douglas. It is on my NULA which was good to go from the start and is a day in, day out, .4 MOA rifle with any Parker bullet and 38-39gn of VV N110. Like every Douglas I have had it shoots most any decent load well and cleans up pretty easily; in my opinion you can't go wrong if you need a barrel in a pinch. My McGowen had uneven dimensions within the bore and required a trip back to McGowen for re-lapping and while it is better than it was it still is slightly looser at the the muzzle for about 6 inches than it is from the breach to the middle of the barrel but it is a sub-MOA barrel. That said, they were great to deal with and I would give them an A+ for customer support. I know I say it every time we have a barrel conversation but Shilen is the only maker I won't do business with based on one bad barrel and terrible (non-existent)customer support.
As stated, I haven't used the rest for SML but have used them plus Benchmark and a lot of Lilja on CF guns. When you get into barrel blanks that cost $300 or more you can pretty well count on them all to be good or the manufacturer to make it right.

I voted McGowan as I have 2 and none of the others. 1 is my 45 smokeless that I got from luke that makes me grin like a little kid at Christmas everytime I shoot it. The 2nd McGowan is a 22 - 250 ai that's waiting to find an action until after Christmas.

I'm voting Brux as that is what my SML is being built with,, and I'm pretty sure Hart does not offer a 45 caliber barrel..

The closest I have to an aftermarket barrel is whatever doc put on the White Bison I have. All my Savages have Savage barrels, all my Remmys have remmy barrels. Only xception is a Douglas I have on a Savage 340 that was originally a 222 and I made it a 17 Mark IV. So I did not vote. I kinda know my limitations and probably any on the list shoot better than I can now. LOL, 10

Russel,
The question "which barrel is best" is not easy to answer. There is a reason why when viewing equipment lists in bench rest shooting that you see more Krieger barrels than any other kind. The reason is,
people win with them. My first choice would be Krieger but Brux is not far behind. Any of the cut rifled barrels are good and there have been many matches won with button rifled barrels as well.
The main quality that a rifle barrel should have is perfect bore size concentricy for the entire length and of course smoothness is important as well. I have worked with serveral different maker's barrels but the two best IMHO are Krieger and Brux....so far.

Brux for me. I say that after using many pacs and Mcgowens along with some Kriegers. All of these barrels take a long time to get so you might as well go top shelf and get a Krieger or Brux, I say Brux because the wait is much shorter and I think is on par with Krieger as far as quality goes....

Pac-Nor because that is what I have. They shoot better than I can but it isn't fair for me to vote since I have not had the opportunity to compare them to others.

Brux, Pac-Nor, Lilja, Kreiger, Shilen, Douglas in that order. I have a Muller blank for a .20 Vartarg. They have gotten good reviews as of late.

I have a Muller blank for a .20 Vartarg. They have gotten good reviews as of late. They should get good reviews as they are the 3rd generation of Rock and Broughton barrels. I almost used one last year as they are Teludyne's preferred barrel to work with but they will sleeve anything. You won't be using one on an .458 SML because they aren't making them right now; they are busy with government contracts and other disciplines. The reason you see a lot of Bartlein barrels in the PSR series is because a lot of guys shoot GAP and AI. Dave Tooley (here in NC and you will see him at AI's table in any local match) barrels AI's guns with Bartlein barrels. George at GAP peddles them as well. It's sort of like how Jeff pushes Brux for his SML. I shot Benchmark and an MRC barrel this year and will shoot a pair of Benchmark's next year; might shoot the MRC for shorter range DMR matches. I hat that Benchmark is seeing success because they are cheaper than others and can be had quickly. That will change if it become in vogue to shoot them based on PSR results.

I voted Krieger even though I have not shot mine in years. I did not like the long wait to get it but I like the cut rifling and being able to order any twist you want, I think John charged an extra $20.00 for the non standard twist. I like and shoot an off the shelf Shilen barrel I bought from Midway. Believe it or not while I waited the 20 some odd weeks for the Krieger barrel I bought an A&B 0.458 straight tube from Midway for under $60.00 and it put 3 shots sabotless under 1/2 inch! So much for an expensive custom barrel, but the nice shiny lapped bores of the customs make cleaning a breeze. dougva.proboards.com/thread/3171/new-project-rifle?page=2edge.
