As expected coon prices are way down. After a 6 hour hunt with Katie we added 11 to the pile for a total of 100. We loaded up and went to the fur buyer after calling around and we avg. $3.76 per coon. Last year we avg. $10.18.

Could you prep them and preserve them and hold on to then until prices went back up? With out a special permit from the State you can't hold hides very long and even with the permit your hold time is limited. Rarely do prices increase later in the season. Its a gamble.

I know the thicker winter coats bring more money. Why the drop in price? Higher supply or lower demand? Are other furs like muskrat and fox also low? I know one local said recently he can make more on coyote then coon nowadays but it's almost not worth the time to finish them.
Of course I can remember when a top grade red fox pelt could bring up to $70 and a guy could make decent money trapping muskrat if he had a good area.

Ken I was told that China over bought and Russia had a mild winter allowing more trapping. Local fur buyers are still setting on some of last years hides. Some are not even buying small coon but are buying yotes. 1 guy is buying nothing. Our hides were prime winter hides. Fox and mink ranches have really driven down the prices on wild furs of late. I remember the days of $35 coon and $70 fox and $9 rat. They were even buying possum hides for a peak price of $3! I knew of 1 guy who mortgaged his home towards the end the late 70s and early 80s fur boom and lost everything when the market crashed.
