Hi, can anyone shed some light on a NIB Savage 10 Ml II camo Tupperware that I just acquired that has a blued barrel that almost seems to be powder coated rough. I also have another 10 Ml II that has regular smooth bluing as we know it. Did savage coat their barrels with something in their last production run ?

Mine is the same ,no idea but I have the camo stock and was told it was made in the last run. good shooting rifle no matter what they did  |

Any idea if it's an extra coating on the blueing ? Does it scuff up easily ? |

I don't think I have any that didn't wipe off. just finished 2nd season with it and it killed my Nikon scope. killed 4 deer and a yote with it. scope problem caused misses on at least 1 deer and another yote. scope headed back to factory shortly

My 10 MLII came with the camo stock. It was actually a nice blued gloss. Fine shooting factory barrel. The only issue I encountered was when they sanded the top of the receiver it made the front and the rear off a bit in height. I bedded my scope base and solved the issue. It loved 325ftx wrapped in a harvester black crush rib and some H4198. Under 4.5" @ 300yds.

Receiver variations in size have been on all my Savages. I have had to use the Burris insert rings on more than one occasion to correct that. I think Ken thought it was from overly aggressive sanding. At the speed the production line cranks them out and the power equipment used I guess I can understand, just don't like it.
My last Sav with the large shank and camo stock had the best bluing of all previous. It appears they were changed at times.

Mike243, what do you mean that you don't think that you didn't have any that didn't wipe off ?
Are you trying to say that it has a protective coating ?
Mine seems to be powder coated rough (not a smooth blueing), barrel, receiver and shank.
I'll try to get pictures up soon.

I meant no marks where I scuffed the ruff coating off, had some handling marks on it after it went back to the factory but when I cleaned the rifle every thing wiped off. I know I have bumped and banged it but it still looks like new. never had any thing other than a powder covered donut so not sure what I have but like it any way |

Savage switched from a traditional blue to a black oxide type on the lower end rifles and the tactical rifles. Supposedly due to the EPA cracking down on the waste products of traditional blueing, so the cost of getting rid of it went up.
Savage also switched to a vibratory tumbler to polish the barreled actions in like 2005-6 so not as much hand grinding/polishing.

Rossman40, does that mean that the Savage 10 ML II is considered to be a lower end rifle ?
Any idea how it stands up to hunting ? It looks like it could get scuffed up easily.
Would this finish be similar to the T/C Weather Shield ?
