Yes, i have removed the QLA from an Omega rifle. The accuracy improvement was very noticeably good. With the QLA, the rifle shot a conical like shotgun pellets at 25 yard. After the QLA was removed, the Omega could shoot good 100 yard groups, with the same bullet.

What i tried to do was leave about 1/32" of the QLA, when i cut the barrel off. Using a tubing cutter, which was suggested by semisane, i made a scribe mark around the barrel. However, the cut i made wasn't square, so i had to square it up with a grinder. Then i used an old counter sink i had laying around, from when i was a working carpenter, in a drill motor, to remove the burr. My thinking was, since i didn't have much in the way of machinery to do a good 'smith' job, i would use the small remnant of the QLA as part of the crown, and it seemed to work. The above target was shot at 47 yard before the QLA was removed. The numbered holes were made by a 500g Conical cast by Flounder They scared me so much i shot 3 more times using the 300g Deep Curl, just to see if something wasn't haywire. Those holes are dyed green. After seeing how them conical shot in the rifle, i cut the QLA off . Then i tried shooting them 500g conical again using the rifle now without the QLA. The holes near center were shot at 100 yard. The holes dyed green were shot at 48 yard. Then just to see if the rifle could still shoot the 300g Deep Curl in a sabot, i shot them at 200 yard. The following target is the result.

Removing the QLA is to help accuracy with conicals. There is no issue with the QLA when shooting sabots.

I have an Encore .50 from first year of production. About 5 years ago I had a gunsmith shorten the barrel enough to remove the QLA and and finish it off with a recessed crown. I also installed one of Cecil Epp's breech plugs that used a cutoff .308 family case thus large rifle primers for ignition. I added a locking hinge pin and relieved the forearm to eliminate barrel and frame contact. My gun went from shooting 3" + groups at 125 yards to regularly shooting 1 1/2" - groups at 125 yards. I haven't shot that gun in over a year though since I got my smokeless from Jeff Hankins. The last load I was shooting in the Encore was 75gr of BH209 by weight and .40 220gr dead centers. I think with more load development and a heavier bullet that I could shrink the grouping considerably. Shoot I may even have Jeff convert this gun one day. My vote is remove the QLA. Merry Christmas!!!! Kyle
