has anyone tried the variflame adapter with large rifle primers yet?? it seems logical that they would be a improvement over 209s as they provide more heat and less force thus possibly eliminating more misfires in cold temps.

Steve posted a thread half way down the page recently about the vari flame. I've used them(lrm's) in almost all my mz's for the last 8 yrs nothing new. They work great as long as you keep the flame path under 1.2"s. Goodluck

They will be great if you use a deeply recessed plug and probably should throw a busing in it. I would recess 3/4" at least. Make it have the minimum steel behind the bushing to still be safe and have at her!

does anybody make such a plug with bushing?? and would it require a different bolt nose?

it seems logical that they would be a improvement over 209s as they provide more heat and less force thus possibly eliminating more misfires in cold temps. I don't think that's the theory but don't think it's ever been definitively proven. Would love to see it be one way or the other though.

actually it has been somewhat proven...load up a bullet/sabot combo and fire off primer only. way more force is applied than needed for ignition

There are several important considerations. The adapters are much larger than a 209. They can only be used with a Vsriflame plug, which can only be used in a break-open that fits an Encore plug. They work great as far as my testing went which was under 70 shots.

Myers129: That is a great idea. I'll take this 209 savage plug that was greatly recessed, drill out the primer holder to fit the adapter holding the rifle primer, then drill out several vent liners to .040, and have a Hankins-like system except for the blow back. Wait, I'll also have to reconfigure my bolt head to hold the adapter.

I have the PR plug that uses the large rifle primer adapter that I want to recess and would really like to have a bushing installed .040 .038 if possible? Does any one have the parts and ability to do such? I was just going to recess a vent and experiment but would prefer the bushing if possible?

I'm not sold on LRMP's being hotter then 209's yet. What I'm pretty much sold on is that LRMP's are cleaner then 209's.

I agree. I did plenty of testing with LRMP's and am back to 209's. If you keep the flame channel short enough (1" and less) it works with LRMP's and they are definitely cleaner but for dependable ignition it's hard to beat the 209's.
