Fluting does not stiffen a barrel to bending from an outside force such as putting it in a press or using it as a lever. However depending on the barrel contour and fluting a barrel could "whip" less when fired do to the fact it is lighter using similar contours. Fluting weakens a barrel to internal pressure.

Bill, Looks like great stock work. A lot goes into fitting the many parts of a rifle to a stock. Look forward to see the finished product and range report. Hope you get hombre back and sighted in with some ml season still left! Kyle

Hombre is almost finished, all that's left is a little more detail and then painting the stock.
It ended up weighing exactly 13 lbs 9 oz scoped ready to fire and although its a little hefty it balances well. I hope to get some pics up tomorrow or Friday of the finished product

That's a sharp looking rig. What's with the texture disks (if that is what those are) around the push-button inserts?
How do you like that stock? I have considered a Manners thumb-hole a couple of times but cannot warm up to the idea even though they are basically vertical grips for the most part which I shoot a lot of. Technically, i could day the KRG X-Ray on one of my match rifles is a thumbhole but I choose not to since it doesn't feel like any thumb-hole I have ever shot.

the discs are 3M rubber tread tape, thought I would keep the marring and noise down from the swivels. I like the stock but honestly I have yet to sit on the bench with it so the jury is still out. If its accurate I have no doubt I will like the rig. I really like Jeffs plug and primer carriers and Im anxious to see how it does with the .250 x .038 bushing..

Does Jeff's plug incorporate the bushing the same way fishhawks does, with the retaining ring??

yes it uses a ring as well, the flame path is about the same as his regular plug though (pretty short). I will never take the bushing out of the plug if it works well, I suspect it will last a Long time...

Bill,
Hombre' will most likely be a "mean Hombre". The OD and black combination is downright easy to look at.

Bill, Have you tried using a recoil calculator, to figure just how much recoil your rifle will generate, without the brake. a 10lb 375 with a 300gr bullet 37lbs of recoil, 400gr Buster bullet 76grs of benchmark, 42lbs of recoil, any more recoil than that will take the fun out of shooting. On the bright side it will make the the biggest brownie very sick Some folk say a good brake will reduce reoil by 30%, so if your cannon turns out 50lbs the brake should make it 35lbs thats manageable, for you. I'm down to using 22 shorts [smile]

That is pretty high fluting --- get it -- high-fa-loot-en. I'm starting to joke like my brother. Actually the fluting seems to end about 6 inches before the brake. Better sell it to someone cheap.

Phil
If it don't shoot worth shucks I will pull it off and sell it back to you! I sized some bullets last night and they felt really good from one end to the other, If I have time I might get to light it off this afternoon.. from the way the barrel felt I will be surprised if its not a shooter..

Marty brakes on the light .45s make a huge difference, more user friendly than one of my heavys unbraked..I suspect the .416 will be no different..

The rings are steel TPS (you can see the brand logo in the pics) and a Farrell base per the original post.
