.45 Rem/Pac with .040" tungsten bushing.
I usually try to go to the range with some type of test or comparison in mind. This week I wanted to continue testing the 3031 duplex: 5/75 of Clays and 3031. Last week I shot it using Win. 209 primers and while it shot (with a little flame coming out the muzzle) it was only in the very low 2400 fps range. So this week I decided to try the load and use the CCI magnum primers to see if results improved. And they did.............sort of? I picked up another 100 fps or so and accuracy was ...........so-so? See group #2
I started out using up some old 240 gr. XTP mag. bullets that I had been hauling around in my bullet box. The first shot out of the cold barrel was high as was the velocity. The load then settled into a group........well, sort of? But, the barrel was now sufficiently fouled to try the 3031 duplex.
Three shots were enough for me to know that I did not care for the load or the velocity with 80 gr. total of powder!
Since I had two more charges left, I shot two 290 gr. Barnes.............again, nothing to write home about and dismal velocity for the amount of powder burned.
To show the difference in using and 3031 (at least for me in my rifle) vs. H-4198 I put together a seven shot group using a 10/60 duplex: 10 gr. Clays and 60 gr. H-4198. Now for 10 grains less powder I up my velocity by over 130 fps and lowered my ES. My accuracy also improved with shots 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 measuring .973"! During this group, I decided to start using TWO .060" veggie wads under the 290 TSX just to see if there was any difference in accuracy or velocity (shots 4 thru 7) Shots 4 & 5 looked promising with identical speeds but failed to hold up for the last two .
Note the primers: The two bronze color ones are the CCI magnums shot with the 3031 duplex. They all wanted to stick on the bolt nose and all showed leakage up one side of them. The silver ones are the Win. 209's shot with all the other loads and they had no sign of leakage.
The final group was the Parker BE's and a 5/62 Clays/H-4198 duplex just to reassure myself they shoot pretty good most of the time.
