I inherited this old marlin 25-20 pump I found a box or 89 gr cast bullets, mold, brass and primers also in the box where some homemade tools, basically for removing and replacing primers. i loaded one with 10 gr of 4198 and literally poured the powder in and pushed bullet in the casing with a pice of wood. I Know very little about reloading. just wondering if this seems safe. Dose the bullet have to seat tight on the powder? I can only find load info on the 86gr bullets. I was going to work my way up to 12gr soon. I love this gun it's a tack driver at 100 yards with factory Remington's but they r $71 for 50 rounds Any info would be appreciated

At a minimum, get a reloading manual.
Dumping powder in such a case MIGHT be ok if it's the right powder but in general is a very bad idea. Chances are, you did not resize the case resulting in poor neck tension. maybe the bullet wasn't seated deep enough and you jambed that bullet into the rifling causing excessive pressure. Maybe the case, being not trimmed, was too long and your were close to getting a case stuck in your chamber.
A reloading manual will do many things for a low price.
1) Teach you the proper steps of what should be done 2) discuss the tools needed to reload 3) Make suggestions on bullets and powder to use for a wide range of cartridges
Don't mess around like this. It may not be safe

I did at least research the powder and load and went light. Thanks for the info and r right. I will buy a manual and dies and I have a single stage Lyman press That I use for my sml bullets. I was curious because of the homemade tools that came with it and the reloaded rounds that have no crimp They suggest that last guy did it this way. That doesn't make it right. Thanks again for the for the warning I will listen.

You can also just give it to me and put it on your taxes as a charitable donation.

I have two 25-20s. One is a Savage 23-B Sporter and the other is a barrel for a Thompson-Contender. Both are great shooters and a ton of fun to shoot. I shoot 75 gr flat nose in the Savage and 86 gr Bergers in the T/C. H-322 and AA-2520 work well for me.

Well it took me a while but I finally got the old marlin 25-20 shooting under an inch at 50yards with 5 shot groups. I now have proper reloading dies and I found the mold. I cast 50 lead bullets they weigh about 90gn It tried many loads and i could not get a group under 2" I think the 1-14 twist just can't stabilize that heavy bullet. So I shortened the lead bullets to the next lubrication groove. Now the bullets 65gn and they shot great with many different loads. h4198 works well. I have a friend that is going to machine my mold so that it makes the lighter bullets. No more filing lol.
