Ok, thanks to all the input on my previous post, you folks have convinced me to go .45 caliber. I have used the Sierra .4515 300 JSP in my MLII 50 and having a supply of these, I would like to use them in a .45 caliber. What tools and equipment am I going to need to consider before I jump into this project? I know that I can get the barrel and barrel drop from Luke. From ther, what else do I need?

Are you putting the 45 barrel on the 10ML-ll. I have the 45 McGowan barrel on one of my guns and the .451 290gr TEZ all cooper slide it without any sizing. It will depend on the barrel size I know my 45 barrel is a .450 bore .458 lands. I am not sure on the other barrels.

You will be able to use those bullets.. Depending on your barrels bore weather or not you will need to size them down. If you need to size them you will need a sizing die. I have several in stock if you need one just let me know. If you want a full form bushing for use on the .458 bullets then send me your drop and ill make the bushing for you.. Untill you have your barrel in hand, you will not know for sure the bore size,, unless you get a Brux or Krieger barrel and then you can be sure it will be a .450 bore and .458 grove and then these .4515 bullets will not fit without sizing. Jeff.

The bore must be .451 or slightly bigger in order for a solid copper bullet to slide down without sizing. P.S. the lands are the minor diameter in the barrel... The grove is the major diameter. The lands should be .450 and the grove should be .458. Jeff..

Sorry I had it backwards! But the Barnes 290gr TEZ are all copper and are .451 and they will slide into my .450 lands. I checked with McGowan and they told me my barrel measures .458 groves and .450 lands. I can slide them through my barrel and it will show the marks of the rifling on the bullets. They are a soft copper bullet if you have not seen them.

When my crazy schedule allows, I need to see if the barrel on my stainless MLII will fit on the blue MLI that has the pitted barrel. If so, I will build on the MLII. If not, then the build will have to be the MLI. My favorite load in the MLII is with a .458 300 grain. I know I would have to size it to use in a .45. If I can ask this question, "What is the best barrel to get?"

That may be what McGownan told you but I bet a donut if you check with a pin gauge it is .451 or more. Within their tolerance range, but it's the reason why many are able to shoot sabotless with the .451 class bullets without sizing. You just aren't getting a .451 bullet to "slide down" a .450 land barrel. Hammer down is more likely.
My pacnor is supposedly .450 on the lands, but it's actually .449.

What is the best way to accurately measure your barrel? I am guessing my Harbor Freight dial caliper isn't going to cut it!

Best way is with a pin gauge set. Cheapest way is probably slug it with a chunk of lead then use your calipers.
