Can you show the vent end of the BP? That sure looks like you will like it much better than the old plug.

You'll shoot your eye out kid! Good luck, I hope it helps you get to where you want your rifle to perform.

Can you show the vent end of the BP? That sure looks like you will like it much better than the old plug. the SMI plug is on the right. for the liner it uses a little button head screw with a .030 vent hole. The one that myers129 did up for me uses the standard tungsten .040 bushing and retaining ring that Luke has in stock. fishhawk modified my first SMI plug and did a great job as well but with the primer still sticking out about a 1/16 it still allowed for some bulging. This was in no way fishhawk's workmanship but simply the way the original is designed.
I'm hopeful this new one will help get just that little bit more performance I believe it can. For the money this is about as tricked out that I'm gonna get.
If I can crank accurate 300yd shots i'll be just finer than frog's hair. If I could do 400 well I'd be in nirvana lol.

Have you tried the stock SMI plug? I have shot loads in excess of 50kpsi in my Ruger #1 with no primer bulging. That includes a 70 gr duplex at 2700fps with a 300 FTX.

Dave, rambler is using the .040" bushing and it seems to be beyond the tipping point for the primers. He blew a couple federal 209a's into pieces and I offered to give him a safer method of madness. If he went to a .030 it might change things for his situation.

I thought the whole premise behind the enlarged flame hole and larger dia. bushin hole would help to reduce the back pressure and primer bulge.
Now I 'm seriously confused?

I was curious if he had tried the stock plug since I have no issues with primer bulging until I start getting gas cutting on the vent threads.

I have never did try out the original plug I got from SMI . When I got it I immediately sent the plug off to fishhawk and got the .040 bushing installed. Also drilled out the flame channel and 1/64". Which worked very good up to about 65GR of IMR4198. After that it's primer bulge city.
The federals flat out blew up so I only use Winchesters.
I didn't think those little button head/screw for vent liners would hold up to sabotless shooting. which is what I do exclusively.

Sabotless only- for years.

Sabotless only- for years. Are these the vent liners you use?? I would think with a nice receiver like the Ruger #1 and I assume a Douglas barrel you would have a different set up, like the LRMP style??

I use the Savage style vents. It is an older conversion before Hankins was around, Shilen barrel. Here is a pic of the vent and a gas cut plug. It is not a good mating surface the way SMI machined the plug, the vent head sticks up too much and funnels gas to the vent threads.

Dave, Why don't you get the tungsten bushing installed?? That was funny Guy and maybe true, just not what you think, depending on the powers that be. Rambler, I had planned to but SMI was out of plugs a couple times when I called and it went to the backburner.

In a break action gun with a short plug and smaller profile barrel I would stay on the lower powder end and not shoot what the big boys are shooting out of bolt guns with larger diameter barrels regardless of vent hole/ flash channel diameter size. JMO..........

Mine is a Douglas 45 cal 1:22 twist, 1.125" for 3.5 inches and then .950 to end of the barrel. 26" barrel.
I do not plan on anything heavier than 65 to 70GR of IMR4198 or it's equivalent. Maybe a duplex of SR4759, got 3lbs of that too.
