Where did ya hear that??
Both mine (.458 and .451) FF dies are made from drop from my barrels.
Tom Post (Swinglock) did tell me that he needs an inch and preferably a little more of barrel drop.

Outlaw, they do use the barrel drop to make a FF die, but it has the ability to be made smaller,I do not think you could form a bullet through a barrel drop and start the bullet without a hammer.

I actually used my piece of barrel to size 250 SST to fit my barrel however it would not work for the 300 SST. Don't try a .458 bullet however you should be able to get a .452 or .451 bullet.
I ended up getting a die made from Jeff hankins and has worked really well. You will not be able to push a .458 bullet threw the piece of barrel. You will only able to push a .458 bullet threw a full form die.

You can try the piece of barrel and push a .458 bullet threw it but I've never tried it and read that you'll need a heavy piece of equipment to do so. I don't think you'll be able to push a .458 bullet threw the piece of barrel.
Try knurling up a 250 SST (quite a bit) and then push it threw the piece of barrel a couple times making sure you index the bullet to the piece of barrel. Look at my group today the 250 SST speak for themselves.

The problem with simply/not so simply pushing a bullet through a drop is spring back. The bullet will almost always spring back to larger than bore diameter. With the adjustable/fixed die, you're looking to size it smaller so that when it springs back it will fit the bore with the right amount of loading resistance.

it seemed to me that spring back would exist, but having the barrel dropped returned to me led me to believe that it had a purpose. as i love shooting all year long i see the need for abandoning the sabot cause above 70° is a waste of time with my rempac. i want to pick the best route for shooting sabotless but also the least complicated if possible (esp. using duplex loads). seems like the swinglock smooth form...i think its called...is what i need.?.?.

Call Luke and get a smooth die, he likely has them in stock, and you're in business. unless you want to full form the .458 bullets, then that will require you sending your drop in to get a full form die made. Swinglock or Hankins can do that for you.

Your barrel drop definitely has a purpose it was sent to you so if you wanted to shoot full form bullet. You send your drop to Hankins or swinglock and have die made from your drop.

Another option if the adjustable (and best choice IMO) dies are more than you want to spend is a lee precision fixed die. Many guys here have some in varying diameters and would probably push some through for you to help you hone in on the size your bore likes. Then you can order one, wait 4-6 weeks if not in stock, size smaller and perhaps knurl up to get a good fit for around $30.
