what action is your gun built on? If it is a Rem. 700ML I would go with one of the 28" Brux barrels Luke is selling.

Is there a chance that the gun is damaged in some other way..Not just the bulge in barrel.

is it a new model? older gun? SS or blue? you can measure in front of the barrel nut if you have calipers. small is 1.057 and large is 1.117
doubtful that you damaged anything else.

If its a newer accutrigger it could be either but if the old style trigger with the flat back receiver its a small shank. if its one of the newer blue model accutrigger models its likely a large but the only way to know for sure is to measure it..

Q: What shank size is my Savage. A: Recent production Savages with 4.40" hole spacing are typically large shank. The only way to know for sure is to measure your barrel diameter right in front of the barrel nut. Small shank will be approximately 1.040". Large shank will be 1.1"+.

Good info. I wasn't sure that the last (4.40 spacing) model had the step in the barrel. The step makes it quite obvious that it has a large shank.

If you cam possibly afford it , get a PacNor replacement barrel and save yourself a lot of time , components , and aggravation . Luke will hook you up .

Thanks for reminding us all how easy mistake can be. On the bright side you will have a great replacement barrel if you go .45.

I did the same thing a few years back...It motivated me to go the Pac-Nor .45 route...Best thing I ever did. Zen

Guns about 10 years old..Flat receiver on the back..and has the 7/8 nut..So I guess its the standard small shank..Dont wanna go to a 45cal..Like to get it back to original.

Maybe one of the builders here has a decent take off laying around they will sell you, if so they may chime in. If not get in touch with someone like myers129 who has the ability to make you a barrel. Good luck, and don't feel bad, you're not the first to do such a thing, it's a reminder for all of us, glad you're OK.

As ohioguy mentioned there should be some small shank blued barrels around from all the .45 conversions. I could see why you want to stay stock, you have all the components already for the .50. Just need a take off replacement barrel.

buzzard01,
I know you were looking for a blued barrel, but I saw on the classified, for sale board. Jeff is selling one of his SS, small shank 50 cal. Pacnor barrels used but in great shape. I think for like 175 and let me tell you the Pacnor barrels are far and above what the savage barrels are. I would buy it myself but do not have a small shank savage action and do not know anyone selling one.
Hope this helps,

+1 what Onecardchuck said. That's a vastly superior barrel, and there are MANY SS barrels on blued actions, even in the CF world....not bad at all on the eyes. If you find that you don't like the combo, it can always be painted/dipped.
Take-off barrels are "iffy". A person would have to be my worst enemy in order for me to sell mine to him!

I have a "take off" 50 SS on one of my blue Savage MLII. It was in like new condition when I got it and it shoots real good. Just my experience, yours may be different. 10
