There has been a decent buzz on scopes lately and I just picked up a Vortex today, so I thought I'd throw in my $.02 and initial thoughts on the two, maybe it can/will help someone out who is in the market for scopes in these price ranges. The weaver (4-20x50 30mm) I caught on sale at Natchez last year for $500 and it had a $100 mail in rebate, so it ended up being a $400 purchase. The Vortex (4-16x50 30mm) I found at Cabela's on sale for $416. So the price range I paid is comparable, but they are somewhat different when paying retail, seeing how the Weaver normally runs $800-$900 and the Vortex is $530ish. (I know, if this were an $800-$900 Vortex, these initial thoughts may be different, but at the same time, this price would get me the illuminated Weaver, so...)
They are both very clear and bright, fit and finish seems good on both, they both feel like quality scopes when you pick them up.
Clarity/Brightness: the Weaver takes the nod on clearest and brightest IMO.
Low light capability: they are both very good, but again, IMO the Weaver gets the nod as being a little better at bringing in more light at dusk. (Minus the Vortex x-hairs win over the really fine Weaver x-hairs in low light)
Initial thoughts, they are both very nice scopes for this price range. It does seem like the Weaver is slightly easier to pick up and get a full and clear sight window with.
One critical difference, the x-hairs on the Weaver are VERY fine while the x-hairs on the Vortex are fairly heavy (noted above), so for bench shooting the Weaver is definitely a winner, but for hunting and low light, the Vortex will likely be better due to the heavier duplex. The illuminated Weaver would be a good recommendation if you were primarily planning on hunting with it. (That really jumps the price up and the illuminated seem to never go on sale)
The Weaver also has tactical turrets which is really nice, this model Vortex does not, that option will take you up another $100 plus.
I will have the Vortex on a 40 cal soon and be able to test it against the Weaver and check its tracking, that will help get a better opinion of the two. While the Vortex is definitely a very nice scope and I really like it initially, I have to say, if I can get Super Slam Euro's for near the same money as a Vortex Viper HS in the future, I personally will go with the Weaver. If Weavers aren't on sale, I wouldn't hesitate to go with the Vortex.
This is all just an initial comparison/opinion, I will get a better feel for how they stack up against each other once the Vortex is mounted and heads to the range.
I'd say you get what you pay for here, just as the retail prices would reflect, they are both good, with the Weaver being somewhat better. It would be nice to take them to Kentucky to see how they look next to the $1500 and up scopes, I've never looked thru them high dollar scopes, and maybe I shouldn't...
Sorry for the long winded rambling session, hopefully someone finds it useful.
Mods feel free to move this, I put this here in hopes it would get more traffic and maybe help out some scope shoppers....
