What is the best smokeless powder (& amount) to use with the Barns Original .458 bullet and the orange MMP sabot?

plus or minus 65 grains of H4198 is a good place to start.

In order for someone to give you a recommended powder load, you need to specify what gun you're shooting. IMHO.

Not the expert here but from what I've learned on dougs, 60gr 4198 should be around max with a sabot bullet to keep from blowing sabots.

Not the expert here but from what I've learned on dougs, 60gr 4198 should be around max with a sabot bullet to keep from blowing sabots. That's in a 45cal gun in hot weather. OP is asking about a 50cal gun. Assuming it's a stock Savage 10ML, the 65gr load is a good starting point.

Agreed. Didn't catch the .458 in a sabot. So used to seeing .45 posts. My bad.

I've shot 56 to 60 grains of VV N120 under a BO in a Black Crush Rib for years...maybe 8? That's always worked well for my stock Stainless Laminate Savage .50 MLII. That load crosses the chrono at about 2290fps. Please, read this: dougva.proboards.com/thread/10215You're welcome.

At the end of my "hot rodding" days with my .50, my go-to load was 70 gr H4198, BCR, FED209A and a 325 gr .458 FTX. Heavy kicker. 2500 fps. Mostly MOA groups. Never a flyer. Held accuracy out to 200 yds.
Not a load for everyone. Guess my point is that by "dropping down" to a 300 gr bullet, 65 gr would be a very safe place to start, but you will probably end up using more if you are trying to max out on speed.
Way back, I accidently put some 76gr charges meant for my 2800 fps 250 TMZ loads into my shooting box. I was planning on using 300 gr SST's that day. After 3 shots over the chroney that measured ave 2650, and a very sore shoulder, I weighed the remaining charges and discovered my mistake. I stopped shooting for the day. The 3 shot group was good, fast and no blown sabots but I felt it was a bit much and never went that high again. So, again, only a story to share that lets you know that you will/could use much more than 65 gr safely. You will probably stop when your shoulder can't take it

In a .50 I think that tar12 has dispatched more deer than anyone with that bullet.
IIRC he used N120 and 60 or 65 grains. Send him a PM, or maybe he will chime in.

67 gns of H4198 with a 300gn BO was my go to combo when I shot a .50...Most consistently accurate setup that I found..N120 was as good but always hard to find. Zen

Another option and one that I had great luck with is 44g of A5744 under that orange sabot and 300 BO.

What is the best smokeless powder (& amount) to use with the Barns Original .458 bullet and the orange MMP sabot? 68 grains of H4198 has worked very well for me with the Barns Original .458 bullet and the orange MMP sabot.

I assume these loads will work with other 300grn bullets in the sav 50's (hornady hp, etc)? Great thread for those of us just getting started.

The hornady 300gr hollow point, 325gr ftx, and Remington 300gr hollow points are all equally as accurate as the BO since they are 458 caliber. Also the 250gr hornady monoflex 458 has shot great for me, but I have since switched to 45 PacNors, so quit testing them. The BO is so tough, it needs to be shot at speed to get the most out of it or it can pencil thru unless you knock it thru bones. It is an outstanding bullet though. Jay
