Savage T/A .451 30" ( no brake or action bedding)
300 MH
76 grains H4198
.041" bushing with 15/64" PFC
CCI-M 209 primers
Winds W-SW 0-5 this morning, perfect for shooting on my range
I shot these groups one after another since it was so nice this morning.
I didn't let the barrel get too hot while shooting, just warm.
Velocity ~ 2935 on Magnetospeed V3, I shot the first 2 shots over the V3 to get velocities and to foul and warm up the barrel. The groups were not shot over the V3.
No idea what happened on group 5.
I built some shooting flags for my range. I filled some 5 gallon buckets with concrete and placed a 2' piece of 1 1/4" pipe in the bucket as a sleeve.
I placed on flag at 200 yards. I have 18' of pipe sticking out of the bucket since the elevation drop there.
I have another flag at 400 yards, with a 10' stick of pipe.
Both flags are made of 1" marking ribbon that is 18" long.
I need to learn how to shoot in the wind better and I figured this would be a good place to start.
Normally I wait for the wind to die down to almost nothing if I can before I shoot. Tonight I waited until the wind was light and variable to learn how to shoot with flags.
A big thanks to airborneike, for schooling me on shooting in the wind and in thermals.
Winds were W-SW 5-10 mph when I shot tonight.
It's amazing watching the flag dance back and forth, when I normally think the wind is running in a fairly constant direction when I didn't have the flags. H
Holy smokes! Did I learn a lot by watching those wind flags tonight!
The 200 yard flag is about 10' below my line of sight for my 500 yard target. It wasn;t moving a whole heck of a lot since it is fairly protected there.
The 400 yard flag would switch W-SW then to south at the snap of a finger it seemed.
I would wait for the flag to hold straight SW for a couple of second and then I would pull the trigger.
The first 2 shots laid right next to each other. And I was getting pretty pumped up.
As soon as I thought the flag was showing SW, I pulled the trigger on the third shot and as soon as I did the flag turned W.... Son of a ...
So that third shot moved over 3 inches or so just with the flag moving a very small amount.
Boy did I get schooled by the wind tonight!
It is a heck of a challenge shooting with the flags, but I think I'll get better over time.
But it is truly amazing how much the flags move with a minimal amount of wind.
I really had no idea how much the wind changed direction until I sat there and watched those flags tonight.
4 3/4" horizontal, and 1 3/4" vertical. So I know the gun groups good vertically, I just need to learn how to shoot with the wind a little better to tighten up the horizontal grouping.
