I have to use Black Horn powder in a muzzleloader hunt in Utah, but I can't practice with it until I get to Utah 2 days early. Does anyone have a Black Horn load using 300gr MH in .45? Any load at all for a .416? Is it too fast a powder to use in a .416?

Is there a convert table or chart somewhere?

I do not have any loads but I do have an idea. I have said it before and I'm sure some will dispute it, but, I have found that bullets generally have a velocity band, in which they perform well, given a particular barrel. For instance a 300MH performs well withing your rifle at 2325-2500fps so you work up your loads incrementally in a ladder until you are in that band and hit a sweet spot if you have to change powders. If you can get a smokeless load to shoot well at a BH209 velocity then you may be able to transition to BH209 at that same velocity and maintain good precision.
Where I believe this might not hold true is that smokeless volumes are very similar for a given cartridge (so load densities are usually with a few percent of one another) so when you change powders and push a bullet back up to that velocity band you have not necessarily changed much of anything else relative to the barrel. Because BH209 is going to be a much longer powder column you bullet starts in a different position relative to the bore which decreases dwell time and most likely harmonics.
Anyhow, that is my best advice if nobody can feed you a good load recommendation.

Phil, try 95-100 grns by weight in the .45 and see what kind of accuracy you get. you might have to swab every few shots I don't know..as Sml said bestill is the blackhorn king and he can give you a really good idea.
the .416? I would think it might be too fast but Im not sure....

In the smokeless success page 3 is a piece by "bogey" and he was shooting the 300 MH with 160 gr. volume at 2445fps. I have tested at 110 gr. weighed and the 300 MH and got good accuracy with no swabbing. Bestill cleans each shot and yes he da man with blackhorn.

I've been shooting 84 grains ( weighed ) with a 300 Scorpion PT Gold. Good accuracy out to 300 yards. Typically shoot 9 - 10 shots without any cleaning.

As mentioned bestill would know but he may be out shooting his new 12 hour wonder gun. I hope to see more results soon, it looks great from the first sight in.

didnt take to many whip cracks i get the feeling jeff liked the challenge. only blackhorn load i can verify on deer is 100 gr by weight blackhorn 209 (142) volume and .060 veggie wad and 300 mh with federal 209a. i dropped 8 deer last season high shoulder shots from 80 yds to 326 yds . i can shoot 5 shots with no cleaning with break removed and hold 3.5" group to 350 yds with 1-20 twist button rifled barrel 25.5" barrel with 20" usable barrel bullet to muzzle. for my recent match shooting i use same load with 325 match hunter 2350 fps to help with wind drift and better b.c. will hold 8 moa at 500 yds but gun is cleaned between every shot. drops are appx 10 mph wind add moa windage per 100 yds zero 100 yds -6" at 200 up 3moa -21" at 300 up 7moa -44" at 400 up11moa -81" at 500 up16.25moa these are my numbers at 60 degrees pics 326 yds 3" exit wound with 300 mh hope this helps. new gun shoots ballistic extreme 300 smooth form to get better bullet swell and accuraccy. but exact load. i have tested loads over 100 gr by weight and accuracy declines and will not ignite over 110 by weight just a waste. 100 gr weight get you rite at 2400 fps that a very fast subpowder load. fyi crc brake cleaner works great to clean blackhorn when stroking patches and leaves no residue. or hoppes #9

When do you get to test your setup on some live game? And your very welcome i love this muzzleloader ride were on. It just good stuff. 30 yrs ago had a tc hawken now look at us. How cool. Hawken 50 yds was great range now 500 yds is a reality.

Thanks Bestilk. I had a Hawken too. It has been a fun ride on the smokeless train for sure. My elk season begins Sept 24 and only lasts a week.
