Hi guys. First off I have a factory barreled 50 cal. Just coming back to the forums after a bit has me surprised to see how little these are talked about (or remaining) as the 45 conversions took the stage. No funds in kiddy for that move at this pt.
300gr Bo w 68gr rl7 has treated me well. So I put it on paper this yr and it was 6" at 200 (3 shots though grouped tight). I know there is no replacement for actually putting out paper groups in different temps but a 6" handicap for cold temps seems crazy, right?
Was 80 when I shot and maybe 30s when I resighted (after swapping bases) last October. Had a LONG miss during deer season, a 200+ yd and some close kills. Seems odd and looking for some opinions on impact/speed fluctuation with temps.
Thanks.

You might contact tar12. He had a lot of experience with the Barnes Originals in the cold and at distances.

A six inch change in POI at 200yds from velocity alone is not likely; you would have to lose several hundreds (like 700) of feet per second. My guess would be something in your set-up like torque on action screws in un-bedded gun if it has been disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled since last season, gun bounced around on a 4-wheeler during season, etc. Then it was not shot again until now so the change went unnoticed.

Thanks guys. I thought that was rather extreme.

I don't know what sabots you use but my .50 has to have the black hcr. The orange mmp is a shade too loose a fit in my gun. They shot okay early fall but you wouldn't believe it was the same setup come season. Some guns shoot crush ribs others shoot orange mmps but most all Savages seem to shoot .458 well one way or the other.

I experienced the same thing with Hornady 250gr XTP's, Harvester smooth black sabots and a light charge of AA5744. The load shot lights out when the temps were above freezing but was all over the map in accuracy and extreme spread as soon as the mercury dipped. Most contributed it to a light load but one person seemed to think it was the Harvester sabot. I myself have no idea?
