With deer season fast approaching, just curious what others are seeing on their cams or scouting trips? Last year was terrible for us on our lease. My buddy killed a nice 11 and another harvested a management buck. I did not even get to sling an arrow at a buck last year. although I did harvest three does. Only seeing the smaller deer thus far. I would post trail cam pics but the site says they are too large.
Also Sept, 13 I leave for my first elk hunt in NM. Cannot wait for that! I will be sure to post pics in the success stories area if I harvest an elk!
Good luck this coming season and remember to be safe! Always wear your Harness!

Good luck Bowhunter. Sounds like you hunt with a bow more than SML. Is your CO trip with bow? If you hang a Mathews bow up for 12 years is it likely to still work?

Thank you very much cow hunter! I do a lot of archery hunting and competition, only after finding this forum this spring is when I got into SML. I do have to say though, I am a die hard bow hunter.. But this stuff is an absolute blast!!! I am building my RemPac now but won't be done till probably October.
We are seeing lots of activity at our farm but the heat has definitely slowed things down. I cannot even wait to get into a tree! Me not killing a buck last year really lot a fire under my a$$. I did have a chance at a big deer in late muzzle loader season but my own mistake screwed me. (I set my blind in the middle of a field the day of my hunt. Snow was on the ground so I covered it In a white sheet). Lesson learned on that one!!!

Bowhunter, heck with them whitetails for now, go have fun chasing them elk! Then you can focus on the deer when you get back. Good luck and hope you have a safe and successful trip. You will most likely be hooked for life, I know I am.. Elk hunting is alot like SML's, VERY addicting.. Best of luck.

Ohioguy, believe you me, I am totally pumped about chasing rutting elk! My good friend runs a guiding outfit in NW NM, he has some giant bulls. I am the first ever archery hunter on this particular ranch. Lord willing I will connect with a stud! I cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars to go on a 10 day scouting trip lol.

I'm two weeks out from bow season here. I'm ready to head out with the longbow; just re-fletched the arrows this weekend. This is the second year in a row the Wildlife Branch on post has not posted the annual trail cam survey but I know where I'm headed nonetheless. Muzzleloader opens in a month or so and I am ready to give the Thor bullets a try this year in the NULA. After that I will work on shooting a deer with the new 700ML in the Green Beanie thread.

That sounds like a chance of a lifetime... Super envious.....Good luck! Locally I havent even been out to scout for deer or sign, nor have I hung any stands... Guess I better prey history repeats itself and normal stand sights are the best place to be and travel patterns remained the same. Most importantly I hope a couple of the bucks we passed last year made it thru.. Keep us updated on your Elk dream hunt..

dove, resident goose opened today, 9/1 but it's mostly rockfish and catfish season for me.
deer is Archery Oct 4 and ML Nov 1 and firearms and hounds Nov 15. Was seeing lots deer but corn not cut and beans way big so can't see much unless they are on the road and that is plenty.
My 1st hunting will be squirrel season which opens Sept 8 and then fall turkey open Oct 25.
A new hunt for me this year will be a ML bear hunt, daughter moved up to "The Blue Ridge and Valley" area and now have some connections for ML bear hunting, season opens Nov 8 - close 14.
I'm not an antler hunter so most any deer that comes along will test the terminal performance of whatever I'll be carrying that day. All of the areas I hunt close to home full antlerless and most of them away have full or very liberal antlerless season. Back around the "home place" on the Eastern Shore 1 hour before sunset saw 96 deer in just a 5 mile drive of the hunting area, 2&1/2 miles each way, and that was out the truck window.
Hunting is always good, it's the brown down that varies. Best of luck and stay safe all, 10 ga

Bow season starts in 3 weeks here in Okla. Muzzle loading season starts Oct 25th. Have seen a few of the local deer around my house the last few weeks. No bucks seen, but they are still nocturnal. Put out my feeder and my ground blind last Saturday. Will see what my game camera has caught during this week. Going to take my first inline (cva wolf) hunting this year. My traditional BP rifles will stay home.

Well just an update, I smoked a huge New Mexico elk yesterday! Most unbalievable experience of my life! He is a big 6x7. My best friend Michael Anthony guided me on my hunt. He put me in huge bulls every single day. Right up until I let my arrow fly on this bruiser! I will try to post pics but I need to resize them. Coming from a whitetail guy, anyone who has ever thought of doing an elk hunt must! It is the most exciting thing I have ever done!

Yes, elk hunting is a must for any hunter! I never dreamed I would be able to do it. I worked very hard and saved for a long time to afford it. All I can say is... I have zero regrets about spending the money on this hunt. It is an incredible experience hearing them buggle 40 yds away from you. Next year I am hunting pronghorn with my RemPac. Hope to bust one out at around 600 yds. Cannot even wait for that!!

Great job, now you can focus on mr. Whitetail IMO, you can have just as much fun chasing them without saving for nearly as long to afford it, DIY elk hunting on public land is a blast as well, and possibly more rewarding if you succeed. You may not get a bull like you did this time, but you can get a bull and do it cheaper and its still the same rush hearing them scream and letting that arrow fly. Either way, its fun and addicting.Great job again...

Awesome bull congrats that is my all time dream hunt, some day I'll get there. This year was my first antelope hunt and had a blast.
Congrats again, oh by the way I practiced all summer long out to 500 yards for antelope and shot mine at 51 yards. Figures but I still got a trophy that's all that matters!

Chad Sounds familiar to my first archery elk hunt, I practiced like a mad man out to 60 yards with my bow all summer, and shot my first bull at 12 steps..... It's always better to be prepared anyways.
