Ok I had to show how terrible of work SMI will let out of their shop. This is a good friends BRAND NEW, NEVER FIRED 45 H&R conversion from SMI. I have it for a little work and I am mortified at this. This is the crown they gave him......... If this is the best you have it's time to close the doors, hands down no light stepping here. I believe in a dollars work for a dollars pay and this isn't it! If you can't tell from the picture. Those are bandsaw marks from hacking off the profiled blank. I am 100% sure cowhunter could put on a Ryobi clinic that would put this job to shame! Rumor is this is what $460 gets you from SMI... It can be fixed and will make a fine gun but that is not the point of my anger right now.

Myers..
You should see the barrel I got from a member to do a install with. It is a McGowen barrel 45 caliber and the bore of the barrel is .020 out of center... There is no way they turned it between centers after it was drilled and reamed. It is the worst barrel I have ever seen. and I have seen many. Jeff.
From looking at your picture it looks as if that bore is off center a little... Is it or is it an optical allusion.. Jeff.

Wow, I would not be happy! I am however anxious to see the "after" photos. I'm sure it will look much better when you're done. That is assuming you're going to fix it and he's not returning it to SMI. Hard to believe they let that slip out the door..

Returning it to SMI is like waiting on hold with the cable company and then saying "it's alright I'll wait for the next available American"
I will let him decide if he wants to unveil the full finished product. I believe he will want to!

myers129: I can't thank you enough for fixing up my barrel. The advice you gave me and timeliness of your work is excellent. I'm glad I went with the step crown, it looks great and I'm confident it will shoot great as well. Shortening it to 26" from 29" I think will lend itself very well to my sabotless plans.
Your equipment upgrades gave me boosted confidence in your finished product as well as the hands on mentoring via PM's and over the phone.
I'd gladly recommend you to anyone wanting gunsmithing services.
Thanks again

That looks ever so much better. Now it looks like a proper rifle barrel. I'm sure Rambler is excited to get it back.

Rambler, thanks for letting me fix you up! Also thanks for the plug on my work. Maybe I just take good pictures? Better wait and see...
SML-- maybe, just maybe I'll start my own shop rather than take over a troubled foundation.

SML-- maybe, just maybe I'll start my own shop rather than take over a troubled foundation. You have newer equipment, anyway! Great job! I have a McGowen barrel in which the other end is actually ruined. Wish there was a "fix" for it!

Good luck with it. Looks like after 8 or 9 months you might actually get to shoot it.

It has been a long haul filled with frustrations and exacerbated by our friendly UPS delivery service. They totally dropped the ball in every aspect of service. I called to get status on the original shipment of my BP and got a different story each time I called. It finally showed up back at my local UPS store. The BP got lost in transit. Oh it's insured but any compensation won't be for 6 to 8 weeks.
Fortunately a kind member on this board, sw, when hearing of my misfortune offered up a BP he had from one of his own SMI builds. And as fate may have it his wife was coming to the city I live in that very next day. Now that's some kind of delivery service. Thanks again Steve
That BP got sent off and is now on it's way back with one of those cool tungsten bushings installed. Thanks fishhawk!!
Then, if that wasn't enough, when myers129 got my barrel the package was open on one end, but fortunately this time everything was there and intact.
This project started out in the very beginning of January 2014.
Would anyone on this board consider 8 full months a reasonable time period to get a smokeless muzzleloader, of any kind, put together and ready to shoot?

Hey now!! I ordered my pacnor .375 in january and still don't have it together.... By motivation on my own part, been working on too many other projects. Got everything up and running now and should be able to finish mine in a timely matter now.
