I want to buy a good accurate air rifle so my grand daughter can learn gun safety and I can take her squirrel hunting. I think a 22cal. is in order here but I would like some opinions on break barrel and pre charged rifles. Also what type of sights, open sights, low powered scope with crosshair, or red dot. Thanks in advance:

I think you are on the right track thinking .22 cal---.17s are marginal for squirrels with an airgun. I like an RWS break action .22 for a beginner. A M34 in .22 with a scope should fill your needs. Makew sure it has the T6 trigger. PCPs are nice but you will need to buy a special pump to recharge them and it is a bit of work to pump them up--they are cool though! Air guns are fantastic training tools for adult or child no recoil or noise to distract aiming and squeezing.

A good springer is an investment but worth it, they are harder to shoot well than a .22lr though, more kick and they can be rather finicky about how you hold them and follow through. I have a beeman R1 that I have had for 30 years,, very well made gun.

And I would go with a scope but a good one preferably make for a springer airrifle, they eat scopes.

My Beaman R1 is also 30 years old. It's a quality rifle.
Pyramid Air or Precision Air Rifle are good suppliers.

I have a gamo big cat .177. It's lethal on squirrels Fairly accurate out to 40-50 yds. Plan on getting it out this weekend. Squirrel season starts oct 1. Much fun. Use a good pellet and squirrel will fall straight out of tree.
You can spend much more on an air rifle, but my gamo shoots just fine. It's a single cock springer. Shoots lead around 1000 fps.

+1. A springer can be tough to shoot. Have to hold it right and follow through with the shot. But once you get the hang of it Lights out.
They are tough on scopes. Probably just as tough as a SML. Scope I have on mine now I have to change. Can't adjust it anymore.

I have the Gamo 17 Varmint Hunter HP 1400FPS it came with a laser and light on it. I removed them and I use the heaviest pellets I can find. It will punch holes in plywood and game too.

I have had a Beeman HW97 under lever springer for about 20 years now and it is a well made and accurate rifle. More recently after talking with 1coyotemaster and going to a local air gun show, I took the plunge and bought a Benjamin Maurader PCP in .25 cal. What a rifle! No recoil (in comparison to the springers), accurate and a 30 gr. pellet at 850 fps can really "getterdone!" Richard

Kenn, i bought a Maurader in 22 cal and have been very happy with it. I use it to control chipmunks and for squirrel hunting. The 22 has plenty of power for 40 yard shots on the larger size Fox Squirell .

My bud has the Benjamin Genesis Nitro Piston 22 and has killed groundhogs to 65yd with a body shot. I know he killed 7 or 8 this summer. I have killed crows at 50yd plus, so the 22 will get it done. I bought the Benjamin Trail NP XL II Nitro Piston, a prettier, larger, fancier version of his. It is an awesome gun, but the trigger is lacking a little. There are easy fixes on you tube, or aftermarket kits from CharliedaTuna.com. I haven't had time to pursue that with hunting season here.
