As I mentioned in my earlier post about my buddy getting Rick Bibby's 45/70 converted encore this weekend... we compared it against my Slufoot converted encore and the breach plugs are different.. the problem is that he put a Winchester 209 primer in it tonite and he said that it would barely close and when it did close it wouldn't cock... I am sure that this is one of RB's on breach plugs.. any ideas?? I told him to try another brand of primers as RB prolly had it set up for a certain brand.. Since it has already been drilled.. could Slufoot or someone put a savage breech plug in it?? I also told him to try and tighten the BP.. but he said that he doesn't have a socket thin enough to fit it.. will the savage breech plug wrench work on RB's plugs?? Thanks for the help guys. Robbie

If the primer fit real tight the gun probably won't fully lock up unless you click it shut pretty hard. I had a bullberry in 300 win mag that was a smidge too tight and had the same problem. It is a safety feature that it won't cock because it is not fully ready to fire a properly headspaced round. Either polish the plug to fit the primers he intends to use or at least try a different primer.

RB liked to make his plugs out of 5/8 NF grade 8 bolts, if it is one of those it would be close to fit a Savage 11/16 plug in it.

If I'm not mistaken RB liked CCI 209m primers? That's what I bought a couple 1000 of. I think that is where I got the idea from. Might be worth a try?

I have an RB .40 caliber barrel with his designed BP. If they are the same as I recall his overall length was shorter and some thought his BP design was a bit better than that of the Sav itself. As I recall the Sav design was to get past the recoil lug area. Memory may not serve me correctly however.

The Win209s are the longest primer out there. The CCImags one of the shortest. If I were you I'd definitely try different primers before I modded BP.

Yes, I have found that win 209 are the longest primers and for a tight gun fitted close most likely to give a problem with lockup/bolt closure. If fitted specifically for win 209 likely to get blowbuy with the other primers. Your results may be different. 10 ga
