With a 20" barrel, that's gotta be a great gun to carry through the woods.

yep and very loud to boot, Wills' 22" is pretty bad but almost tolerable from a tree stand. a 20" Im afraid would be rough.
the short guns seem to find their way into the hands when its walk about time around my house..

He has break on it and has to wear hearing protection when he shoots it. Even when he hunts said that was a pain in the butt. The gun is on cf action with some type of bp that the. 45 auto mag case sesls off. He shoots the be's finger tip loading loose. I don't know the flash hole size.

When I called and talked to Charlie at Ashland he said they use some kind of modified Knight breech system with a large magnum rifle primer. Nice guy and very willing to talk and customize a rig for someone

Ya, my light weight .458 is nice to carry too, but barks when fired.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm new to the board and a proud owner of one of Charlie's customs. It is the real deal. The ignition system is proprietary but uses a cut down .45 Winchester Magnum shell (not .45 ACP as mentioned earlier). I harvested my first buck with this gun at 350 yards with a Parker Emax in 270 grains. The deer was overwhelmed and dropped.
I have shot it out to 500 yards with the ballistic data Charlie provides with each gun and WOW. I just bought a Savage ML II, as I believe Savage paved the way for some of the myth shattering performance we are seeing today with Smokeless and I think it will be a collector item some day. Best wishes to all and above all shoot safe!

A customer of mine was at their shop. They do use a LRMP and a shorten case to hold the primer. He builds most if not all on center fire actions. His design does infringe on Rem and the Ultimate design no two ways about it.
I ended up building this same guy two muzzleloaders one on a Savage M/L action and one on a REM 700 M/L S/S action both using the 209 ignition system He is very happy with both guns. End of story!
I can build short barreled muzzleloaders for tree stand hunting or out of a blind. I really don't like to go shorter than 24" plus the brake. A 20" barrel would be very loud. The whole idea is to build a long range muzzleloader.
On the other hand you really don't need a 30" barrel either. at 26" or 27" barrel still handles pretty well and it will give you just about all the velocity a 45cal is capable of producing with safe loads of IMR 4198 or H 4198

Isn't it just a Richard Franklin design? Not up on the Remington/Ultimate buyout but did they patent case style ignitions? The shortest 45 I've done was 23" and I didn't get any noise complaints, 40's down to 20" with a brake(that one is loud I'm sure)

A 20" Katahdin Encore is tolerable with 57gr. H4198. I do not hunt with ear protection, but I don't shoot at many live targets either. I didn't notice much difference in the Encore and my Remington 25" conversion. No ear ringing.
Brakes are a different story, I hate them. I wish someone made a brake that you could twist closed when hunting, I believe a manufacturer made one for centerfires, Browning maybe?

I had one of those handy little breaks on a Savage 300 Win Mag. A quarter turn of the break, would close the ports. I also had a Browning A-Bolt with the BOSS system break, which I thought was a much more effective break. The Browning system had an interchangable non-ported replacement for the break... you'd unscrew the actual BOSS break, and screw on the matched-weight solid piece for hunting.

Elkman1310...As I mentioned, I just bought a Savage ML II. I haven't shot it yet, but not thrilled about all the information I'm reading about barrel cooling time and sabot failure due to heat and pressure. If I were interested re-barreling the ML II to a .45 cal and shooting lan riders, is that something you could build for me? I am not a gunsmith and value safety over saving a dollar by trying to do something I'm not skilled at.
I would get Charlie to do it, but he builds on 700 actions and probably wouldn't be interested in the build.

Hi claydawg Sabots do require a cool barrel. I really have not had that much trouble with sabots. They have got to fit right. And sometimes it can be a real challenge with a stock Savage barrel. They have some crazy sizes.
Its always a big step to go from a 50cal to a 45cal. But once you did make the change you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Yes I can install a barrel on your Savage. If your interested just send me a private message we can talk about what you want and go from there.

claydawg, Welcome, this is the place for SML info. Switching barrels on a savage is really simple. I live relatively close to the Ashland area and there are shooters in the area that have built their own guns on MLII actions easily and I'm doing a 700ML now. Plenty good instruction available. Look over this sight and lurk about and PM posters for specific information. Unless you have real machine work to do the Savage is easy to deal with. the prefit barrels really up the performance level of the MLII. I'm about 50 miles from Mechanicsville (Northern Neck area) and be glad to help any way I can. Hope all is happy for your Christmas. 10 ga
