I want to thank all members first for all the input and sharing of info. I am trying to narrow down a build which can shot accurately with as little drop as possible and with good grouping out to 400 yards for under $1000. Looking for advise on rifle frame, barrel maker and lenth, caliber, loads, bullets and person to build rifle. I know this is a lot of info and appreciate the answers from members which actually have owned and shot these builds. Thanks

Savage ML2 or Rem 700 ML 45 cal Pacnor or McGowen barrel 1-22" twist, (25"-26" in length). 275-300 gr Match Hunters @ 2600-2800 fps hillbill, Luke, Fishhawk, Rossman to put it all together. This all depends on what kind of price you can find a good donor action for. IMO, this is a great route to go and about as inexpensive as it gets for a true long range sml.

This is what i did I bought an H&R SB2 frame , a set of stocks (laminated green) sent frame to H&R fitted frame with 32 " buffalo classic 45/70 sent to Jeff , 2 plugs 25 holders and a sizer die made from the drop $550 to include all the machining re crown added Nikon glass and im well under $1000....... to me this was the cheapest way into the smokeless world ......for starters . and the H&R is American made . next is a Hankins bolt.
My reasoning for goin with Jeff was simple ..... he was the only one that listened to me when i asked about LMRP ignition i had used it in inlines for yrs . His answer was send it to me and let me look at it next think i new was ........we can do this ......... and i had what i wanted . And he didnt hurt my wallet .

I just did a post on your "break action" thread that pretty much reflects what ohioguy dittos to him " " said. You already have the Savage MLII so that is the best way to go. Pacnor barrel, Lam stock of choice, pillars/bed/3rd action screw all on your MLII. You can do it yourself or farm it out. Yes, easily less than a K including good base, rings and glass. $.02 10 ga

Thanks a lot guys, I believe I'm going with the savage upgrade as per Mossy horns advise. I do have one question my bolt action on the savage ml has always felt tight and had to close with a primer, is this normal? Thanks again for all the education you guys have given me and the site managers hard work.

I do have one question my bolt action on the savage ml has always felt tight and had to close with a primer, is this normal? No. Could be that it is head spaced to tightly, or something not adjusted correctly in the bolt itself. Another possibility is that there is foreign matter at the end of the plug or in the barrel where the plug seats, not allowing the BP to go down far enough.
