Sorry didn't see your subject. For the money I'd look for a converted savage or rem go 45 cal that way your not pulling your hair out with a stock 50 savage.

Are you looking to spend $1000 for a bare gun or scoped rig? Depending on what you want a rem 700ml can barely be done for just under $1000.

I built my McRem for just under $900 no scope but that's the way I'd go. If you need a scope you can get a decent scope for $200 to get you going. I have not had any issues with my Nikon omega you can get one of those for around $200.

Honestly if you want to get into smokeless look at a CVA Apex with a $1000 budget you can get one heck of a rig. They shoot just about as good if not as good as any of these rem or savage builds. If you do it right you can get the bullet sizer die from Hankins and you can shoot just about anything in it.
With your budget I'd go that way. imho

If you aren't stuck on just a savage the conversions are really nice, cheaper and shoot really good. If you are stuck on a 50 cal then the savage is probably the best way to go. New or like new 50 cal Savages aren't that hard to find and are usually reasonable and in your budget. The cheapest way is a break action 47-70 converted to ML. If you are interested in a conversion I know a dealer who has them converted by the 10 bunch and usually has them in stock. Usually several different types and configuerations. Most retail at 500 to 700 before glass and random accessories. And welcome, you are now in danger of becoming an SML addict. 10 ga

$1000 budget... Bone stock 50 cal SMLII, a decent $300-400 scope and you'll be shooting 1.5" groups with standard loads right out of the book. I like fast and accurate guns as much as anyone, but these bone stock Savage's are hard to beat for a regular deer hunter like myself and my boys. We have 3 of them and love 'em!

I have owned both. Still have the mdl 10. Sold the MLll years ago. I much prefer the Mdl 10 over the MLll as it tended to be more accurate and has the locking lugs (which I feel is a safer system). The modules can be a PIA at times and they do wear out causing accuracy to suffer (if you get your hands on a mdl 10 ensure you order a supply of modules from Savage) The bores on both tend to be a little rough at times and make it hard to load after a couple shots. To alleviate this I lapped the bore and applied Duracoat ceramic coat and have never looked back If you can find one I would definitely choose the Mdl 10

Hi Tucker05
If you don’t mind I have a couple of questions. I purchased one last year and I have hunted with it for one season. I really like it. Same as you I had a 10ml-2 but I got rid of it.
The questions I have are on the modules, breech plug and vent liner. I am guessing the module wear you are referring to is the start to gas leak? Are you using the original vent liners or the new style from the 10ml-2’s? Just trying to figure out what future maintenance issues I will have and what items I should try to stock up on.
You stated the modules can be a PIA at times. What issues are they giving you?
I am in Minnesota and I hunt here and North Dakota late season so the modules are easier to handle when it -10.
PM sent with cell #
Thanks, Joel
