Some more good results.................

Well actually, I shot the smallest five shot 100 yard group (.244" CTC) I ever shot with a muzzle loader (smoke-less or otherwise).
A perfect day weather wise and with my two best shooting buds Herman and Bill. Sun, no wind and 60* at 7:00 a.m.
.45 Rem/P-N.
The barrel had been J-B cleaned and slick. I started a five shot group using a 250 gr. moly coated Nosler HP with a 5-60 Clays/H-4198 duplex load. The first shot did the same thing as last week...........a loud boom and a fire ball out the muzzle. Velocity registered 1210 fps. Typical for a sabotless load that is not tight or not creating enough pressure. This shot never hit the target. Shot #2 brought the velocity up to 2545 fps and did hit to the left of the final 3 shot group. I say three shot since shots 3, 4 & 5 averaged 2674 fps with a 15 fps ES. This combination with the moly coated bullet needed a couple of shots to foul the barrel enough to produce consistent results.
So here is where things started looking good. I had loaded up five duplex charges of 5/65 Clays/H-4198 to try specifically with a 200 gr. bullet. I decided to use a 200 gr. FTX Blem. The first two shots formed a right to left oblong one hole group. I then used the cool rod to keep the barrel temperature very low; the third stayed somewhere inside. I have gotten this type of result in the past but invariably lost the fourth or fifth shot. At this time I had Herman and Bill watching in their spotting scopes. #4 went in and just seemed to make the hole ever so slightly bigger and rounder. Then #5 just seemed to go somewhere inside. Also noted was that the last two shots had increased some 40 fps or so but the shots stayed in the group. Due to the fact the bullets are pointed, they did not cut a neat hole and caused the paper to rip. My measurement had to be make on the composite foam board backer with the target removed.
This just goes to show how a good load with a decent bullet is capable of producing good groups. It would probably be easier using nothing but bullets of Parker's or Luke's quality...........never the less a combination of a lot of shooting along with good loads and reasonable quality bullets can work.
I did not have any more of those loads or would have shot another group.
The third group with a 250 SST was fair except for the third shot.
Having had good results the past two weeks with the 250 Parker BE and the 5/60 duplex I decided to give it another shot (well, three) and it did not disappoint. Not quite as small the past two but 1.555 at 300 was right in the ballpark and the POI was almost identical.
