Have been muzzle loading for 20 years flint locks/inlines etc..but I'm wanting to step it up. Here at Ft.Campbell Ky deer can only be hunted with shotguns or muzzle loaders. My goal is to step up a nice longer range muzzle loader, (300 meter max) I have a Remington 700 muzzle loader action all cleaned up with a badger ordance bolt knob, pacnor .45 cal 1/22 twist head spaced and mounted, also have a few Remington 700 .50 cal muzzle loaders and have a few questions.
1. best load bullet combo for the .45 cal pacnor setup, to sabot or not to sabot, I see some use a couple different powders do you mix them or not, drop one in first etc...I use the hotter CCI 209 primers with blackhorn is this the way to go with smokeless
2. have been playing with blackhorn powder and wow, great stuff, what does smokeless give me over blackhorn with guns set the same
My Remington 700's I have hunter bolt nose kits/breech plugs and shoot blackhorn, with CCI 209's and very nice
Thanks for your time and the board

for one smokeless is a lot less money than blackhorn. I haven't used it but I understand it's very clean, but so is smokeless.

you will get more speed and less fouling with no smoke.
the 275 or 300 match hunters work very well with 67-70 grns of H-4198 BUT you will need to size the bullets down slightly to fit your Pacnor.
expect 2650 fps with a 300 MH and 70 grns of 4198 with sub moa accuracy in a properly set up gun..

What smokeless powders do you have available....? some here were/are restricted to blackhorn 209 last hunting season during the SCARE it was shame,Pacnor barrels need to shoot smokeless powders, thats what they were made for.....h4198 is sweet at 58-62 gns with a 195 barnes to a 200gn sst, xtp, nosler in light blue harvester sabot will get you around 2600ft/sec.....sabotless , if you have a sizing die can go two ways, smooth or full-form..... Then you have sabotless and you can up the charge to 68-71 because there is no sabot to blow..... With a smooth die you can size .451",.452" to fit your barrel to ride the lands of a .458" barrel ....either a veggie wad or wool wad is used with this technique to promote pressure containment ...With full-form sabotless ,you would size a .458 bullet to completely fill a .458 bore with minimum obturation needed for a complete seal...and most shoot with no wad under that bullet.... Take a look at TG's pressure traces at the load data section there are many different loads listed and traced there to give you something to go by....

Lets see, smokeless over blackhorn: better velocity with less recoil, cheaper per shot, better variety of powders available and some of my guns like it "dirty" and shoot better w/o being cleaned, I go the whole fall hunting season w/o swabbing the bore, and the ones that like a clean bore are super easy to swab every 3 shots. I only shoot saboted both 45 and 50. In the 50s the .458 cal by 300 gr. bullets do best for me in the BCR or orange sabot depending on gun. In the 45s I use smooth blue sabot and 200 gr. 40 cal XTP or SST mostly but one 45, have 4, is tight and I use the blue crush rib in that rifle. I mostly shoot 4759 and H4198 and IMR4198. And yes I shot smokers, rifles not people, for over 45 years before going smokeless. Now no smoke, just SML and some BH209. Hang around and lurk about, there is a lot of info and insight here and no danger of flaming. 10
