This is my smokeless .45 cal. ml combination/ 410 shotgun/ 22lr-22mag. It was 410 H&R youth gun that was in a house fire and tossed into the scrap. I recovered the action as everything else was pretty much destroyed. The barrel lost it's bluing but bore cleaned up perfect. I had an old 22 cal. barrel that I refitted with an adaptor to accept 22 mag as well. The barrel is about .001 tight for the 22mag but after much research found out it would work and both calibers shoot at about 1" in 50yd. Then came the muzzleloader and that has been the most fun of all. I was a toolmaker for 19 years for one of the Big 3 and retired from a job I really loved and now have my own shop so I keep playing plus do enough work to fund my hunting trips.

Shoots great with harvester Black belts 225gr. and most 200gr. sabots with about 52gr IMR4198. But becomes a little more difficult when I go sabotless. I like how the Barnes 250 TSX performs (upsets) but is touchy to get consistent results in accuracy. Definitely likes a wad under bullet, seems lubed is better. I used both card and wool wads. I can get around 1.5" groups at 100 with FTX Hornady 250 gr. Barnes 2-3". The black belts are around an 1" Sabotless I use 60gr. 4198. The reason the barrel looks like it does is because the first barrel I put on it came from a 45cal TC Hawken. I cut the breech off and made it inline. I used black powder and derivatives and could only get some sabotted bullets to shoot. The bore was really bad but outside looked great so I tried it, anyway it was good experience. Then I discovered Dougs Message Boards and smokeless and the rest is history. I found a production overrun at GM of .450/.458 1-30 twist, ordered it and changed everything over. Drilled and tapped, dovetailed, put on the 8 flats and welded on the lug to fit the action. The reason for the octagon barrel is that the forearm was already made from the first barrel. The breech plug is 5/8-18 thd. that you can remove with your fingers. I looked at many breech plug designs and used what I thought best and incorporated them into this stainless steel plug. No liner yet but will modify it to include one if needed. I feel the 1-30 twist is too slow for sabotless but works well with with sabots or power belts. You can take groundhogs, coyotes out to 200plus yds. with those blackbelts but are really soft bullets. One stayed in a groundhog at 82yd.-talk about soft.
