Well I canceled my order for a Remington 700 CDL DM in 7mm-08 due to the recall rifles will not be available until early fall. Instead I opted for a Weatherby Vanguard S2 Sporter in 7mm Rem Mag. Order has been placed should arrive in one to two weeks. I still intend to top it with a Leupold VX-6 2-12x42, using Warne QD rings and bases. Now for the questions, I see that Warne offers extension bases for the Vanguard. Are they like a savage where I will need an extension base or will I be ok?

Hornet,
Just curious how you ended up with that caliber? Weren't you wanting a .260 and than you opted for the 7-08. The 7 Mag is a completely different animal. Nothing wrong with that at all...just wondering how you ended up there.

Well I looked at a couple Tikka's one that was a wood stock and another that was the light model, while they are in my opinion a solid and smooth firearm I couldn't bring myself to purchase one once I handled a Weatherby Sporter. I have two dealers in my area that give real good prices on guns compared to the others, I put in a couple of inquiries for a Weatherby Vanguard S2 Sporter, one chambered in 7mm-08 and the other was for 7mm Rem Mag. Unfortunately neither place could get the one in 7mm-08 without having to order it from Weatherby directly. In a way I kind of got stuck with it. My father in-law shoots a Remington 7mm, it is an older gun he got from his father. All of the ammunition he has for it though is labeled 280 Rem and that is what his dad shot from the gun. My research has indicated that it is most likely a 280 Rem that they rebranded a 7mm at the beginning of the 7mm craze. He likes it and has not had any complaints thus far. Another reason would be that I may venture to Michigan to hunt with him at some point.

The 7mm Mag is a great round and you can tame it down a bit if short range encounters on soft targets is anticipated.
You can shoot some good, stout 175 gr bullets at the same speeds as the 7mm-08 shoots 140-150 gr bullets. That means potentially LESS meat damage using the 7MM Mag.
It's really an awesome cartridge. I have an older, 1962, 700 that is a simple wood stocked sporter. It shoots amazing with heavier bullets. Not so amazing with bullets under 160 gr.
Good luck and keep us posted as you test the waters.

I have a .270 Vanguard I got at our local WalMart when they once got out of the gun business. Actually my uncles got two also and my cousin a 7mm mag from them. They were at give away prices then to close out the stock. They since have started recarrying firearms there. They all shoot well, I had the trigger adjusted on mine which did help and restocked it with a wood stock that I glass bedded, I did the same for my uncles.

The .280 Remington underwent a name chance, to 7mm Express, then back to .280 Remington. It is not a 7mm Remington Magnum. The two chambers headspace very differently and interchanging is dangerous.

7mm I believe you are correct that it is a 7mm Express, He is the type that would never try anything without the proper information first. If the ammunition he got from his dad is 280 Rem 150 gr. PSP then that is what he will buy for the rest of his life. Secondly correct me if I'm wrong but it should be impossible to chamber a 7mm Rem Mag in a 280 Rem since the Rem Mag is a 375 Case necked down to a .284 bullet and the 280 Rem is based on the 30-06 case.

Agreed Two different animals there with 3 different names. Be careful and cautious what ya stick in the chamber.

Correct, you are not going to chamber a 7mmRM in that 7mm Express. You could chamber the 7mm Express in the 7mmRM though.

What are your thoughts on the scope bases? I have seen some pictures of older vanguards that required extension bases. Will my new S2 require them too? Also thet recommend the Federal Vital-Shok 160 gr. Barnes TTSX. I see your point on the ammunition I will not make the mistake of shooting 280 Rem in my new gun. Plus I have never actually seen any ammo labeled 7mm Express on any shelves.

Plus I have never actually seen any ammo labeled 7mm Express on any shelves. That would be some old Ammo if you did and probably covered in dust. The name changes took place in the late 70s to early 80s IIRC.

I found two cases of 7mm Express in the warehouse of the gun store/range I worked for through high school and college (late 90s through early 2005) that I formed into .280 Improved 40°. They provide 500 pieces of formed brass that lasted about 10 years. I haven't seen any since.
The boss also had a bunch of old Remington 700 Classics I bought too: .350 Rem Mag, 7x57mm Mauser, .35 Whelen. That place was a Remington junky's paradise.

Well it came in, I picked it up Thursday. A very nice looking gun with the walnut and rose wood front. Fit and finish are good too. I need a few more weeks to get the cash for the optics and then off to the range. I'll post some pics once I get the scope mounted.
