After considering many of the smokeless powder muzzleloader offerings out there, I chose to have Jeff Hankins build my smokeless powder muzzleloader. I spoke with Jeff today and he is hoping to have the gun finished in time for the shoot in August. I chose a Remington 700 stainless short action, Krieger #9 contour stainless barrel .45 1 in 20 twist, Jewell trigger , Bat stainless trigger guard, Holland's stainless recoil lug, stainless barrel band with ramrod beneath, stainless muzzle brake of Jeff's design and all stainless is to be bead blasted to a matte finish. As far as optics go, the Nightforce ATACR 5-25x56 is the scope that I decided to go with along with a Leupold Mark 4 2-piece base and Mark 4 34mm medium rings. I bought the scope and rings separately and will be sending those up to Jeff soon for mounting and range testing. I decided to purchase the muzzleloader from Jeff for a variety of reasons. His breach plug design was a big factor in my selection. It seems to offer a good seal from gasses and can be primed and de-primed quickly without necessarily firing the muzzleloader. Jeff seems to be really passionate about the design and quality of rifle that he sends out of his shop. The muzzleloading videos that Jeff has posted on YouTube further attest to his passion. I will add to this post when I receive my muzzleloader from Jeff and have some time range time results to share. I'm planning on attending the shoot in August, work schedule permitting. Good Hunting and Shooting to all! Kyle

Scope included in that price of course, if that makes us commoners feel any better about ourselves... You will definitely have a shooter hope you fill a lot of tags with it.

Have fun with your new MUzzleloader , you've got a good one. Zen I like to do a lot of research before making an expensive purchase. Jeff's ignition system appealed to me. It seems to be designed well. He seems to have a good reputation and has my business. I almost made a "bad" decision to purchase a smokeless muzzleloader that had to be fired to be de-primed. I like the idea and flexibility of de-priming without firing, even though the other gun I mentioned boasts a reliable seal. Kyle

I'm just a common guy myself. It has been about 15 years since I have had a custom build made. I've been poking back and managing my money for a while to afford this gun. I plan for the gun and scope combination to outlive me. Kyle

Jeff will make you a custom that will make you very proud of ........he does make a very nice sml.... The only decision I have left for Jeff is how to paint the stock. I want all of the metal to be natural stainless bead blasted. My scope and rings are black matte. The Stock is a Manners MCS-T3. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I tend to like solid colors, but I am all ears members. Any pics you all have would be appreciated as well. Kyle

Welcome. Don't bother to lock your gun up in Kenticky. We are all honest guys who like 209 systems. I've got some green Cerakote that would go nicely with the stainless motif.

I will have to say that I admire the stance that McMillian took over their banking fiasco. I saw recently where they are branching out into the credit arena themselves all the while helping other gun businesses and promoting the second ammendment. Are you or anyone else viewing planning on going to Jeff's shoot in August?

Kyle,
If you leave it stainless it will always be "bright" so I don't see any reason to pick a drab color stock. Depending on when and how your ordered your Manners I might leave it raw. I have done it with a McMillan in fiberglass and have seen it done with a McMillan carbon; the carbon looks really neat and I wished I hadn't painted my Edge after that. If you paint the stock anything other than black or grey, subdue the metal (or consider it).

Nick That's good to hear. I purchased 100 of Mr Parker's 275gr. Match Hunters to try at first. I have heard many good reports of accuracy with the 275gr. Ballistic Extremes, just thought I would try a projectile with a higher B.C. and thicker jacket as well. I'm thinking that this setup should work well on whitetail and hopefully elk one day down the road. The groups that you are getting with the Hankins Smokeless Muzzleloaders are outstanding. Jeff seems to be putting out some very accurate smokeless muzzleloaders for quite some time. I do have a question regarding primers. Are you loading Federal 215's?

The 275 match hunters have worked well for me so far in my rempac. They fly true and will put the hurt on a whitetail.

Nick, or anyone else with a Hankin's muzzleloader, could you disclose what speeds you are getting with H4198? Have you ever shot the MH 300 and 325s, and if so what speeds are you getting? Several of us are testing speeds using various plug designs. I think one of the more common loads--and the one I shoot, is 70 grains of H4198 under a 300/310 MH/APB. I'm guessing the Hankins system gets some high speeds. That will be one of the great things about the Kentucky shoot. Watching the Hankins and other designs operate. Cowhunter, What is your average velocity for the load listed above? Barrel length and ignition system? Thanks, Kyle
