Finally got to shoot my stainless/laminated .45 cal Knight Extreme for the first time. This will likely be the last time I will be able to shoot in reasonably cool temps until fall, as summer temps in the high 80s and above will be here before my next days off. My Extreme has the newer bolt installed and the breach plug that works well with BH209.
After I got it bore sighted and then on paper at 50 yards, I moved to the 100 yard range.
Took three shots and two more scope adjustments to get it's POI at 3" high at 100, then shot for groups using the fallowing load with two different bullets:
<>200 grain .40 cal XTP
<>200 grain .40 cal SST
<>Knurled all bullets.
<>110 grains by volume of BH209
<>Blue Harvester sabot
<>Winchester 209 primer.
<>Its topped with a Bushnell 4200 3-9x40mm in Warne rings and bases.
I'm increadably pleased to report that the Knight exceeded my expectations on all levels. Shot four 3-shot 100 yard groups, 2 using XTP's and two using SST's, largest group shot was with XTP's at 1.16" smallest using SST's measured .565". The new bolt allows almost zero fowling from blow back, the recoil is basically neglagable. Now I say this with no small amount of thought on my part, but with my Knight performing like this, I strongly doubt my Encore will see much use at all any more unless I can get a deal on a smokeless replacement barrel for it, and then with my 10ML-II also shooting lights out with 325 FTX's, my Encore will likely see use only if one of my sons uses it. Will be keeping my eyes out for any other Extreme's or Elites I happen across for sale.
Admittedly I have limited knowledge as to why Knight rifles fell out of favior in the first place, (I likely suspect price being the most likely cause) but if the performance I experienced is the norm coupled with their quality and excellent good looks, I am bewildered as to how they aren't far more popular.
My sons are fighting over who will get to deer hunt with the new Extreme already.
