In Artjr's post we talked about seeing how the 100 yard load works out at 300.......or something to that effect. Targets three and four address that situation.
Today was about as perfect as it could be (weather wise) starting out at 44* at 7:30 a.m. and getting up to 70 by noon. Sunny with Zero wind factor. Turkey walking 50 yards in front of our targets and doing a lot of gobbling! Love it!
Fired one fouler............a loose fitting 200 gr. XTP under a 10/60 ....Clays/H-4198 duplex thru a clean bore and this time, it went bang on the first try......vs. no bang last week with 4759/4198 with the same loose bullet.
First up was that same 200 gr. XTP that need no sizing along with the 10/60 Clays/4198 duplex. The group was not outstanding but three of the five did just over 1/2" at 2901 fps.
Second group I shot the last five old 225 Speer hollow points (yup, the lead tips had turned white)with a 7/60 Clays/4198 duplex and no, it was not a one holer.
Now for the third group, I shot three 300 gr. Sierra Flat nose pistol bullets with that same 7/60 Clays/4198 load at 2548 fps (typo on my stat sheet had 2748). This punched a tidy .787" group. Because I know the heavy bullets hit low, I was using my first mil dot and as can be seen, the elevation is about perfect. Since I only had seven more of these duplex loads put together, I decided to shoot four of them at 300 yards. What I did was to go to my second mil dot and shoot at the top center target on my 300 yard board. As you can see, it dropped 16". So, in reality, I was 5.5" high at 100 and 16" low at 300. I would have needed to be in between my third and fourth mil dot to be centered at 300. Note: Shots one and two are 1" apart and are also 1 fps apart in velocity and the entire four shot ES was only 17 fps. Shot #3 made the group MOA and shot 4 opened it to 5.6" I had indicated in Art's post that I have many loads that with shoot small groups at 100 but often open up to 6 to 7" due to the poor quality of these pistol bullets. In this case, that was just about what it did and still was capable of being deer good.
With only three loads left, I shot them with the 275 Parker BE. Here the velocity went up abut 80 fps and the bullet only dropped 6". But the group was actually larger than the first three with the Sierra. And finally, as I did not have any more 7/60 duplex'es, I shot the 250 gr. Parkers with 5/65 Clays/4198 load. Here, with the same POA, they hit right in the bull I was aiming for but again, the group was worse than my Sierra 3 shot group?
Anyway, today, the El Cheapo out shot the more expensive bullet.
