[ ] now we get to some duplexing. this is 275MH with 5gn RED DOT under 65 gn H4198 at 100 yds... sounded different and felt different only four shots here. was running out of this charge

[ ] Then I ended up here...5 shots of the same duplex of 5/65 red dot and H4198. this is at 100 yds. took my time between shots and just KNEW I was going to choke..lol as clos as I can measure it the group is .740... I worked through loads from 69 grn up to 71 grn with the H4198 before I went to the duplex load. This is Best I have ever shot ANYTHING in a 5 shot group. And I mean I was sweating this..lol So I think "Capone" is pretty well figured out at 100 yds...now to adjust the scope a little and stretch him out. And Richard... I really do like the results that the 5 shot groups yield. Even though sometimes I think I am going to choke to death... Thank You all Drop

Looks like you are making real progress. I only test at 200yds, saves components and weeds out a lot of loads quick that may be good at 100 but never survive at 200+. I am also shooting the 275MH, and am having great success with straight 70gr n120, 70gr H4198, and duplexes of sr4759 or n110 - H4198 10-60gr ratios. My barrel definitely likes loose bullets and wool wads, so I will likely hunt with one of the duplex loads. Those 250ftx's do shoot pretty good for me too, but I built this gun with 400yds in mind for field deer and want all the help I can get with good bullets. Good luck.

Nice going drop!!!! Makes you feel confident in the load when it can keep FIVE shots together. And just remember this: If it will not shoot tight at 100 yards, it for sure will not shoot TIGHTER at 200. Richard

Drop: Thought you might be curious as to what the 5/65 load generated. So I ran a trace in my 25in barrel (bushing plug, .029in orifice): The bullet loaded tight, taking 2 hands and all my weight to seat. Ambient temp was 70degF. This load seemed safe in my barrel under conditions present at the time I traced it but might not be under other conditions. TG 64I) PN45 RedDot/H4198 5/65gr 275mh veg 5/16/14

That's developing 3700 ft./lbslbs. at 100yds and 2.1 in. high for a 200yd zero......at 500yds it still has 1283ft./lbs....potent to say the least....Capone should be able to take care of business......

Tight fitting bullet and 70 degree weather will give it a higher pressure spike IMO ...Isn't 50k the considered safe ceiling limit or was it 55k....?

Russell
don't know that I would go hotter but you should be safe with that load. I think you have found the right combo for that barrel. some barrels are bugholers from the start and some need some tweaking.
I left the screw on the counter the night I talked to you and the wife put it up; now I cant find it ( yet)
very good 5 shot group by the way

drop-nice shooting. I would keep a close eye on the plug for gas cutting etc-hopefully it will not. btw what bushing size you using?
now back up to 200yds or farther!

Gees...dont know the bushing size. Hillbill would know that. I didnt realize I was so close to the edge with this...guess im lucky ...since I tried 10 gn of red dot with 60 gn of h4198 a few weeks ago...thinking real hard about backing down to maybe 2 or 3 gns of red dot and 67 or 68 gns of H 4198. This barrel is a 25inch #7taper....but like I said I dont wanna be on the ragged edge either.

Keep in mind that Jeff Hankins shoots 78 gns of i4198 under the same bullet all the time.... FYI, IMR4198 is bulkier than H4198 and generally yields lower pressures with the same load. edge.

Good shooting. Let us know how long that bushing lasts if you continue to shoot that RD/4198 combo. Looks like it is working good, I would assume that bushing will open up fast, if so, maybe one of Earnhardt's pure tungsten bushings will be in order.

That may be the case ,but according to Richard's results comparing the two he found them to be VERY similar and producing very close to the same velocities .......wouldn't 78gns of I4198 make more pressure than what Drop is shooting here...?

Have to take into account that this was a loose fitting bullet. A tight fitting bullet should up the pressure some. T-2 is a 209 primer trace, the others are LRMP traces. Great shooting!

Keep in mind Jeff Hankins has a different ignition system and locking lugs on Rem 700 centerfires.

Keep in mind Jeff Hankins has a different ignition system and locking lugs on Rem 700 centerfires. They both have custom barrels that are designed to not let loose.....Hope we never see a plug of any type give way........

We all have custom barrels but not all have lugs on there bolts. If you trust the set screw holding the bolt on the 700ML for 78gr IMR4198 that's cool. It's not me pulling the trigger.

Have to agree with this and your previous post as well. Custom barrels and all, I'm gonna stay underneath the 50k mark personally. JMO
