Today started out at round 60* cloudy with some showers later in the morning. We were again treated to a number of turkeys wandering around our 200 and 300 yard berms.
This week I started out with a fouler on the clean barrel. The load was a 240 gr. Speer bullet on top of a 10/50 duplex of 4759/4198. The bullet seated very loose (one hand) and I had my doubts about ignition..........Well, it did NOT fire. I re-stuffed the mixed up duplex and pounded it down and this time the Win. 209 set it off. In the past, any duplex using Clays as the primer, always fired! Even with those loose loads. Moving on.......
This week I was using the 300 gr. Sierra Flat nose rather than the 300 XTP. These bullets are sized to .4505". The duplex was 10/65 Clays/2015. I knew the 2015 was a slower powder so I kept the Clays at 10 gr.. Again, shots one and two were identical and hit very close to each other. Unknown why shot five left the group? The velocity was not that far off from the others and in fact had a 12 fps ES.
For group two, I went to 5/65, Clays/H-4198 the load that shot real well last week with the XTP's. Here I am using 5 gr. less powder but going from 2546 fps with the 2015 load to 2630 fps.........about 84 fps faster with less powder. Again, shots 2 & 3 were identical and also hit in the same hole. Another low ES: 12 fps.
For group three, I went to one of my tried and true loads: 10/60---Clays/H-4198. The velocity here was almost the same as the 5/65 load I used in #2. 2626 fps with a 10 fps ES and a sub 3/4" five shot group.
I wanted to say shots four and five were the same velocity and hit in the same hole, which they did, but were so close to the rest and at 10 fps ES it didn't much matter.
As good as this load shot, did thought I would take it to 200 yards with the last four bullets I had in my box. The velocity averaged the same but the ES was 49? Here the group opened up a bit. Shots 2, 3 & 4 were OK at 2.6" but shot #1 left the group? Some might say "shooter error?" but when you shoot as much as I do, you know when the shot looks and feel good........and I felt they loaded and felt good. Again, for pistol bullets, I think they do quite well.
Just a note: All my Clays charges are thrown from a Lyman 55 powder measure and the main charges are thrown form a Harrell's powder measure............No scale is used except to set the measures.
