I am impressed this year. Normally after deer season the postings drop off. It seems the rifles are put away, other outdoor activities start etc. This year many new thoughts on rifles, powders, bullets, ignition sytems, builds. Really keeps it interesting, keep the ideas and thoughts coming.

I have a barrel ordered to build a new rifle soon I hope. It will be a .416 with a 30" finished length and be 1.25" at breech end for 6" then taper to 1" at muzzle. It will be built on a Savage Dual Port PTA and H&S Precision stock. I will be using a Hankins breech plug system in it. Hoping to be getting a call before long that the barrel is shipped. It will be a McGowen contoured blank unthreaded.

That's gonna be a pig! Hope it shoots well for you! I have a pacnor 45 26" with a similar contour(#8) on the way for another 700ml build and a pacnor 28" .375 coming for a centerfire conversion. Should give me plenty to do this spring and summer! Probably gonna have to send one or two past builds on there way to new homes...

myers129: Some full form with the .375, also 9.3 mms knurled are a possible alternative. Some 9.3mms have to be slightly reduced then knurled back up. The Norma Vulcans are really .365 and in some barrels do not need sizing. Each barrel is different. Flat base lead core is the more standard successful route. Keep us posted.

Jims do you still have your .375 land rider? Did you ever get a full form made and what velocities were you trying to achieve? If I can get the integral comp cut that I am wanting id like to stray "just" shy of 375 cheytac range. Gotta love limitless case capacity! Of course a powder chamber will be required I am just unsure of the design and size right now. Pacnor gave me 4 months to figure it out before they will ship anyways. Thanks for your input

to myers129: I have both the smooth and full form so I shoot both land riders and full size. Have not shot many bullets yet with the new barrel. No chamber as I did not know what I wanted for sure, speeds from memory in the 2600 fps range to start using 4759 as a starter and VV140 as the main. Better vent life on limited shots than before and no brake on this one. A bushing might be of value once I get everything sorted out. The powder column is long.

Nothing special here other than taking the PN .458 off the 10MLII and replacing it with a .451 Palma type barrel. Full form die will be in order.
Also got parts on order to make a knurling tool that will be a lot safer than knurling with files!!

dannoboone: After you get the knurling tool built and used let us know how it all went. It just seems that a dedicated knurling tool should be better or more repeatable than files.

Really lubricates the gears between the ears. Dannoboone I too look forward to your approach for a knurling tool. I agree a specific tool for knurling would be overall more beneficial. Also if the tool can be adjusted for a specific diameter of knurl would eliminate the use of a sizing die. Look forward to hearing the results of your endeavour. Ed

build's- have one in the process that will be contoured much like markb317's except in .450/.458 to keep it Indiana deer legal. a #19 hunter brux interrupted fluting in a rem sa sporting the hankins ignition system. 6 mo.s out on the McMillan heavy benchrest stock. should finish out in the 29 1/2'' area braked by idochted ported brake.
the above will utilize a hankins sizing die that will do ff or smooth from the same die- same approx. cost.
should be a very interesting year & I enjoy reading what others are doing.

One of my favorite quotes which I think sums up the spirit of this board,
“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” –Walt Disney

I bought an Anschutz 1712 Silhouette Sporter barreled action. Did not want a fancy walnut in the woods. I have a Richards Wolverine thumbhole laminate ordered. They don't do inletting for that action, so it's coming without inletting. I guess I'm doing it myself on the mill. Finishing with automotive urethane so I can sand and buff scratches out. Hawke Optics 6.5-20x42 Tactical (small side wheel) on BKL rings. I have a fair amount of match grade LR ammo (Fiocchi, Lapua, Wolf) to test from my Anschutz 54 sporter. Death to the tree rats!

Sounds like an awesome build. I rebarreled a 541s with a Schneider barrel for the same purpose. It's lights out and I believe yours will be even more impressive! By far my rifle shoots wolf match extra the best and that's fine with me, it's pretty cheap by target standards. Gotta plug them in the eye with the slower target stuff to get DRT but the rifle is capable of it if I do my part. Have fun with your build!

Here are my two ongoing projects. A rem 700ml with a 26" #8 pac nor .458, B&C tactical medalist. Remington 700SA CF, it will be a .375 pac nor, 1.3" for 5", taper to 1" in next 2.5", then straight 1" tube to 28" finish. Will wear a magnum muscle brake and sit in a tactical medalist stock black with red web. Today I opened the scope mounting holes up for 8-40's for mark IV mount. This machine is the cats meow for such jobs and installing pillars.

Markb317. That is the ideal build. Add auzzle brake, powder chamber and CE bullets and you will have a gun that shoots like a Chey tac but weighs 1/3 as much and can be used during muzzleloader season. Meyer129. I'd like to be adopted by you and forced to live in the tool room.

No pain, no gain. Least that's what I've always heard
Personally I would rather have a second of pain compared to lugging a20 lb rifle in the woods plus whatever the weight in your pack.
I've never felt recoil while shooting a deer. Now on the bench is different.
