Beautiful gun! Glad for you that the barrel is close to 451 land to land. My HandiRifle is slightly over 452 which leaves out MHs and even SST/SW. If I'd have know, I'd converted an Apex also.

yes made breech plug myself. it is a hybrid design. internal dimensions and lengths match those of a savage plug with carbide insert. and rear section similar to qrbp of cva . makes for great hunting weapon and easy to clean. plug is 416 stainless. like anything price is rite definitely can make them up . easy to install for a fella with some knowledge of head spacing and a good lathe , I installed step front on plug to keep threads clean .

No offense but the only thing I can think of for you going to all that trouble versus just buying the Bergara 45 caliber muzzle'loader barrel with the QRBP breech plug and just installing a carbide vent liner is that you wanted a 1:20 twist barrel.

Exactly rite and shoot sabotless high bc bullet with 3" groups at 300 yds ? Cant do that with slow twist 45. Plus add flat trajectory. Try 500 yds with factory 45 then compare to this 45/70 build no comparison

This gun is smokeless capable also.....even though he posted it here.....the .45 bergera can't touch that....IMO....

That is a nice setup you have and enjoyed the read. When a person shares what he has done or capable of it also allows the reader to get better acquainted with the individual. Wish I had your talent for machining as I now enjoy limited tinkering for ideas or concepts to explore. What else can I say but nicely done.

Ed thanks for encouraging words only problem is very addicting once fellow gets shooting a accurate mz always tinkering. I would love to rebarrel a apex with a Douglas xx barrel and 27" with275 match hunter thing would be very accurate long ranger..

The reason being is because that 45-70 barrel is a bergara and I know for a fact that the bergara muzzleloader barrel is made from the same steel as that 45-70 barrel and heat treated for 48 hours too.

A stainless breech plug designed to seal off the plasma from its threads and that is head spaced to zero on a center-fire action that can handle a 300 Winchester magnum, seems like a sturdy setup to me.

Rite on have to clean between shots but few patch strokes game on, and that why they make elevation turrets and 30mm tubes
