Hello Fellow Shooters, I've just found about about this site by recommendation from 'wolfer' at modern muzzleloaders. I hope to soon glean enough pointers from you guys to launch my first build on a SML. When I first saw this reference I didn't know what it meant, so I Googled it. Around these parts it referred to Smith Mountain Lake! I soon realized that it had to do with modern propellants in front-loaders. I plan an using my SS Rem 700 ML for my first attempt. Anyone who has been down that road and would allow me to follow, I am open to any and all suggestions and advice. And 'wolfer', a special thanks goes out to you personally for giving me the lead to this site, where I see lots of the members are sharing the ideas that I am looking to become familiar with! Thanks to all of you for your contributions to the shooting community at large, Jimmy on the Ridgelines of the Roanoke Valley

Welcome, my folks lived on Smith Mountain Lake for 20 years after my father retired, their house was on a point near the 122 bridge crossing in Lakemount and my brother owns a house on a point near the dam. When the folks moved there in 1980 it was reported that Franklin County had the highest consumption of sugar per capita in the US! Rarely did a week go by that there was not a report of a still being busted back then edge.

Nowadays, with all the infamy from television, we drink our corn from the ABC store. Everybody's got a variety out there. Have you tried Beam's 'Jacob's Ghost'?

I do not yet have an SML. I respect them and have enough sense to fear the unknown. I am considering my SS Rem 700ML for conversion. I would like to pose a question. I've seen pre-made SML barrels for the T/C Encore on the market. I load for wildcat chamberings in the Contender on a regular basis. Q. Could a T/C Contender barrel chambered in 45-70 have a breech plug fitted and be used as a SML barrel as long as the charges were within tolerable pressure ranges that the contender frame could tolerate? I am hoping that one of this site's sage members might chime in with their insight on this issue. I know that I would not be building an even competitor to The Bad Bull, which professes to launch a 275 gr. bullet at 3100 FPS. WoW !!! That stomps most centerfire 45 calibers! Average Velocities listed below: 1).458 African 2250 2).458 Lott 2407 3).458 Win Mag 2195 4).458-2" American 2039 I'd be quite pleased with 2000 fps outta a contender. This might be hopeful but I imagine my 45-70 will do it now. A lighter bullet might be needed, tho. Thanks, guys, Jimmy
