Yesterday was our last day of ML season. I left the house midday and thought I would just take a slow walk and see what would happen. I made my way through the woods and then through some Christmas trees that my neighbor has planted. I finally made my way close to one of my ladder stands that covers an old grown up field. I hadn't hunted this stand all year so I thought I would get in it and stay until I got too cold, I didn't dress heavy because I was planning on walking.
I was in the stand maybe 30 minutes when I spotted an 8 point buck about 100 yards from me. There was a lot of tree limbs between me and him and not enough room to squeeze the 200 SST through a hole. I watched him for at least 30 minutes and counted his points several times. He finally made his way to a spot where I cold thread the 200 SST through a softball size hole and put it just behind his right shoulder. At the shot his front end went down and he pushed his self into a fence about 10 feet in front of him. I couldn't see him when he hit the fence because of the tree limbs and brush. He made it about another 15 yards down the fence line and expired.
I reloaded my 26" Pro-Hunter barrel with 64.8 grains of H-4198, pushed down a 200 SST in a smooth blue Harvester sabot and capped it with a fresh Winchester 209 primer. I then got down out of the stand and went looking for my 8 pointer. I went straight to the spot where he was standing when I shot and I found blood. I looked around and saw him laying about 15 yards away, as I made my way to him I couldn't see any antlers and when I got to him he didn't have any. All he had was two bloody spots on top of his head. Both antlers were laying on the ground where he crashed into the fence about 10 feet from where I shot him. This is the first time I've ever had this happen, shoot an 8 pointer and get a slick head.
I didn't take any pics of this one. I checked him in as an 8-pointer but debated doing that because of the antlers falling off. I figured the right thing to do was use my buck tag because he had antlers when the gun went off.
GOOD SHOOTING!
