Bought a CVA Hawken stock off ebay a few months ago, putting the parts together a little at a time when funds allowed. Brand new 32" 58cal 1:66 twist barrel. Used Perma Blue cold bluing on the barrel and then buffed it down with oiled steel wool to give it a slightly worn look. Antique i guess? Tonight i did 2 coats birchwood casey walnut, let dry, soak 0000 steel wool in boiled linseed oil and lightly buff for a smooth finish and a great way to test color of stain. Remove with mineral spirits if more stain is needed. I loved it so much that i doubt i will put a truoil finish on it. Lighter spots are the natural colors of the wood after oiling. Its in the perfect spots too where the stock normally would get a lot of wear and tear from normal handling if you were a mountain man, tramping all over the mountains. Not the greatest pics, i will get some with it outside tomorrow. Still have a great deal of brass work to be done before i antique those parts. The worn barrel bluing job really set it off.

Looks good man. What brand barrel did u get? Douglas. Deer Creek still had a few left. After that, they are all out of 58cals Those Douglas barrels flat out shoot. I know some guys that shoot them up at NMLRA shoots and man can they really pump some accuracy out of them. Looks great man. Let us know how it shoots. A .58 Cal is about the only thing I don't have.I own several .54 cal and .62 cal. I have been toying with the idea of sending off one of my .50 cal and having Bob Hoyt Bore it out to .58 cal for Patch Round ball or possibly conicals.. He has done a few barrels for me in the past and when they come back they flat out shoot.

Have a 58 Cabelas from my smokey years. It's a 48 twist and 28" long and a great shooter with PRB. It'll slam those 280 gr. prb clean through deer right on out to 85+ yds. Course i'm shootin 110 gr of 1.5F Swiss. Never had to track a single one. All drt or only 15 yd. from shot and seen em layin there after smoke clears. Your's certainly looks good and you've done a good job. I'd still shoot open sights but at 63 my eyes just aint up to the job. When you get it finished post some pix of targets. Thanks for the post, 10 ga

first range report. I got her all set up and ready! 100gr Pyrodex RS or 90gr Pyrodex P are excellent loads in this gun with a 570" ball and .018 pillow tick patch. Patches come out perfect without any holes or burnt spots. 50 yards with 100gr RS. I have since changed to a front blade sight. Rear sight is off a marlin 3030. Works great to! I filed a bunch off the sight and got it 1" low at 100 yards. Ran out of balls so that was the end of that range session LOL.
