I would love for a BnC scorer to weigh in here but only with pictures or video if able. I have scored deer for years. But I am not a BnC scorer. There are two sets of measurments that I see as very subjective in the eye of the scorer.
First the main beam. It seems ambiguous to me where to start the measurement at the burr. You can make a several inch difference if you choose a point closest to its nose vs farthest away from the nose. Would love an official measurer to post a pic her showing the proper location.
Next, tine length. I have seen BnC scorers wrap their cables around the bases of the tines and make a pencil mark. This does nothing. You can easily change the agle of that cable and get a way different mark. I believe many scorers make their mark above the main beam and into the tine, thereby shorting the actual length of the tine. Its cause they wrap a cable around the base pretending that it means something. Every time I see it, I believe they are still marking the widest part of the tine base rather than identifying the imaginary top plane of the main beam to get an actual starting point for the tine. But again, Im not a trained scorer, Im just a know it all. Honestly, I just dont like the way those measurements are determined.
Can anyone (other than another know it all) speak intelligently about this? Preferably an official scorer? And please be albe to show pics if at all possible. I have read many descriptions and they all leave it open to subjectivity. Thanks whomever!

Not a scorer, but the B&C guy I watched score did not wrap the cable around the tine. To determine the starting point of the tine he stretched the cable across the outside, on top of the main beam to make his mark where beam and tine intersect.

Sounds way better. I like it. Makes more sense to find the top plane of the beam like that. Thanks. Keep it coming guys.

I'm not a scorer, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express once, so here is my take. My deer never get scored by an official, so I can call it what ever score I want Just bustin on ya Mike!

Not sure I interpreted you correctly but if main beam length is your concern? Starting point should be from the center of the beam at the burr on the outside edge and continuing in the center of the beam for its entire length. www.boone-crockett.org/bgRecords/bc_scoring_ntwhitetail.asp?area=bgRecords&type=Non-Typical+Whitetail+DeerFWIW I like to use a piece of steel banding material to find the bottom of the tine. Stiff but flexible enough to bend around the outer edge where the tine intersects the beam. What did your buck tally?

It was actually my sons buck in the trophy room. I greened it at 179 gross. Mine last year was officially scored at 206 5/8 gr and 189 7/9 net if thats the one you are refering to. Again, your banding makes way more sense as well. And yeah, the center on the outside edge. Leaves some room IMO. Maybe not that much. But a fairly close proximity.

I can take it. Most of mine dont get an official score. I had one scored in 1998 just so I could see the process, then last years buck. But Devins buck is special enough to take to the Iowa deer classic so the thought of scoring comes to mind again.

Hey I had one scored one time, I was pretty proud of it but you guys blow me away with the monster deer your killin so I ain't tellin what my little guys scored. No doubt I would want to know as well and Devins buck is a very special deer, most hunters will never even see one that big in a lifetime of hunting, much less get one as a young man. Mike, I hope you got a group rate with the taxidermist, I think you got many more bills to pay with him!

Lol, he said to me yesterday... "See you in a month". We have been on a pretty good run for three years indeed. But things cycle. North American Whitetail magazine is publishing my story next issue. As I say in there, I hunted for 27 years thinking I may never get a deer as big as what my kids have. Seems like when it rains it pours. But the biggie is I change what I do when what I do doesnt work. Its taken many years to realize that, then some more to be willing to do it. I was bow hunting this weekend and had a doe blowing at me. I wanted to zip one into her boiler so bad. Didnt do it. Then saw a decent buck afterward.
Anyway, as many say, score doesnt make the memory. Cool thing for me is that all of our big ones, I have been with one of my kids. So its all the more special.

Mike is that the November issue or December? I used to have a subscription but it ran out so I want to make sure and get a copy from the news stand, when do you think they will be out?

I just got the November issue, so it must be December. It was originally to be October but other stories and ads pushed me back. I wrote the publisher to ask if he would include Devins buck from this year with a paragraph at the end about it. Seemed fitting since Devin first put the crosshairs on my buck. And I made him pass on a 150 ish 10 pointer. Sweet reward came around this year for him. But the story had already gone to print so we couldnt squeeze in Devins photo and paragraph about it. So I have to assume it will be in December a they told me. I will let you know when I have it in my hands and can indicate the issue. Thanks for asking Dwight.

I wonder which will be easier. The haircut or smokeless? Lets start a betting pool!
