I have been asked if I have any bruisers spotted this year. Well to be honest, I hunt areas I know to produce big bucks and hunt them when the time is right. I dont necessarily spot them first. Iowa youth season gives our youth a great advantage as bucks dont turn to their wiley ways quite yet. My son shot this one on his third time out. Understand, he is a veteran at age 10 having hunted 5 years now and has put in alot of time and has passed on many nice bucks at my request. But finally, I turned him loose on this one. Many say 170 inches but I have yet to score him since I had to run it to the taxidermist quickly and leave town on business. But a great trophy for my son or anyone for that matter. Mike Attachments:

And for those of you who havent read the story, my little buddy had the buck I shot last year in his sights but could not get steady on him and he had the maturity to not take a shot he couldnt make cleanly. That buck went 206 gross. He sure deserves a great buck like this one after 5 seasons of Dads discipline to not shoot small bucks. Especially since he has several smaller ones already, he was game to wait for a big one. I am one proud Dad! My story of last years buck will appear in North American Whitetail Magazine in the November issue. So they tell me.

He uses my Remmington 700ML 50 cal. 80 grn pyrodex 240 grn xtp. When he was 5, I bought an old CVA and cut the stock down and he used only one 50 grn pyrodex pellet. Last year he started using the Remmington as he out grew the CVA.

Congratulations to you both. You are teaching your son well.
When he gets a little older and wants to shoot that Rem700ML to 300yds, go over to the smokeless board. ;D ;D

Congratulations to you both. You are teaching your son well. When he gets a little older and wants to shoot that Rem700ML to 300yds, go over to the smokeless board. ;D ;D I have 2 Savage ML2s One .50 as seen in the pics with my buck last year and a Pacnor .45. Thought about converting the 700ML but it shoots really well out to 200 and my kids are a bit small to haul around the 10ML. My ML2 .50 already shoots 300 yards proven by yours truly. And I have yet to explore the distance of my .45 since I put it together this summer. Did you think I was a new to this game? Lol! Thanks for your kind words. Hunting with kids is the best!

I love xtps but my Savage doesnt shoot them well and the Remmington does, but much slower.

Congrats DEVIN! Mike the adoption papers are complete and I just need you to sign off... ;D Ok, but how much will it cost me!?!? It would get pretty expensive as I would have to bring Quentin along for field dressing, dragging, skinning and boning. He gets mighty hungry after all of that activity! ;D

I love xtps but my Savage doesnt shoot them well and the Remmington does, but much slower. Again congrats on a great buck with your son. Nothing like teaching your son how its done and rewarding him with such a fine buck. I think the XTP bullet is the Timex watch of the watch world. It does not get much respect because its not all flashy, does not cost 4k and not all bling bling but its dependable sure keeps good time. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. My Remingtons will shoot them into 3/4 of a inch groups at 100 yards all day long and my Savages will group them around 1.5 inches which is good enough for me. Ive stretched my Savages out to 250 yards before with the 250 GR XTP with complete pass throughs on both Boar and Deer. DRT was the results. Enjoy these years with your son. My son is 22 years old now. We share hunts now but I have to catch him on his work schedule now days. Not mine.

Yeah they have been for me as well. Once I started shooting them 15 years ago, I found the 700ml likes the .44 cal 240 grn which is what I load the .44 mag with as well. So always have some around. When I bought my first Savage, I used what the Remmington liked.. It didnt shoot well but that was back in the days of VN110 and super fast chrony times. I am down to around 2150fps now and use 300 grn BO's. I should pop in some xtps to see how they do. Last years buck held that Barnes bullet. His shoulder scapula stripped the copper jacket off. i found the lead at where a belly button would be. Only 109 yards. Not sure an xtp would have been stopped. But cant really do a side by side on that theory. Have a good season.

Wow what a Buck....for anyone, much less a ten yr old.
I hunted in Iowa in 2005, looking for one like this, sorry to say every deer I saw was running and most were slick heads.
Great story and keep the little ones hunting, just got back from KY last weekend from the youth hunt there - both my 10 and 12 yr old harvested a doe. Very proud of them as I know you are of your little man !

Got Devins buck back from the taxidermist. Still green but I came up with a gross typical score of 179 1/8. I have measured them short and long before but usually get within a couple of inches.
If any of you ar BnC measurers, I struggle with tine origination points at the main beam. I understand where the tine is supposed to start but it seems quite subjective for the scorer. Unlike circumference measurements. I wish there were a more definitive, less subjective way to determine where the tine begins at the main beam. I also have a worse time determining where at the burr to begin the main beam length measurements. And exactly what path do you folow. Again subjective. Maybe I should start a post wherever approprite to get an official scorer to weigh in. And with pictures showing what I have said are subjective measurements.
Anyway, back to this deer. It would have been second place in the youth firearm category at last years deer classic. So I will enter this buck into this years classic and report an official score here.

Nice buck Mike, saw your comment about the BO, it's a lot tougher bullet then any SST or XTP. Frankly the toughest lead core bullet I know of. If you want something tougher, your looking for an all alloy bullet.

Not sure which comment about BOs. Unless you mean the buck I shot last year stripping the copper off of it. And no pass through with the remaining core. And that was not so much a comment about the BO as much as the tough old buck being able to hold a BO. I did shoot him the long way through and in the shoulder. If that is not the comment, refresh my memory. TY.

No maybe I misread and thought you were disappointed that the bullet did not hold together. I was surprised myself to hear the jacket shed, never seen one do that before. But those big boys are tough and a raking shot is the toughest. I shot one at about 80 yds once from above and behind with a BO. Decent 175lb buck , no monster. I hit him forward of the ham and the bullet came out the far shoulder, no bullet recovery. I know Rick has only recovered one or two BO's out of all the deer he shot with the BO.
