Any of you guys shoot what are called "Contemporary Longrifles" ? I have a friend that makes them here in Virginia and they are quite nice and EXPENSIVE ! www.aledge.comAlso another gentleman who I have yet to meet . But have seen some of his work which looks really good ! www.lowellhaarer.comThere's also another fellow here in Virginia that makes some fine looking Virginia style Longrifles and well he should as Clay Smith runs the gunsmith shop at "Colonial Williamsburg". Sorry to say he doesn't have a webpage as such !

This guy used to work for Colonial Willamsburg until recently when they closed the gunsmith shop down ! When you look at his website they show pics of his rifle as well as his wife's rifle . I've seen them both in person and they certainly are nice ! www.claysmithguns.com

I made a deal a few days ago with a gentleman in Anchorage Alaska that has a "Black Hart" Longrifle in the "Dickert" style . It's only a 45 caliber but I figure it's a good place to start !
And the price was about a third of what a new "Virginia school" by a Virginia maker will cost me !

Many of these are what could be caller replica guns which closely follow the originals others use styles and items that were not used in the time pertinent to the gun and are sometimes called fantasy guns or a continuation of the longrifles evolution unfortunately some folks get them confused when lookibg for a period correct gun so some homework and communication is very important when purchasing one.

6ptsika, Got a photo of that rifle yet?...jim I ended up with 3 rifles actually ! First I got a rifle built by "Blackhart" following the "Dickert" style in 45 caliber . And a few days after I committed to that one I purchased a Virginia style rifle in 50 cal that was made by one of Brad Emig's guys . Then in july I purchased a Isaac Haines rifle in 54 caliber that was built by Getz's brother in law and I purchased it from Clay Smith (the ex Colonial Williamsburg Gunsmith) and had him add a sliding wooden patchbox . I am sorry to say I have not fired them alot so far but that should change over time !

The rifle with the brass patchbox is the 45 cal Dickert , the middle rifle is the 50 cal Virginia and the one closest is the 54 Isaac Haines ! Of the three I think I prefer the Isaac Haines although the Dickert isn't bad either . But thats not to say the Virginia rifle isn't nice as well . But that Haines rifle just comes up good in my hands

While I I don't disagree with you I don't totally agree with you either ! Most of these guys that have any type of following will tell you they DO NOT make copies of originals ! And just about all i talk to "say" they follow a "school" . Meaning they could be making rifles in the Sheetz style from western Virginia in the late 1700's and early 1800's . While another group may follow the "James River Basin" school that would be more inline with Pre Revolution or colonial period . And when you get into the variouse schools in Pennsylvania a man could spend an entire life learning everything he could and still not have a grasp on 50% of the variouse schools of longrifle building to have taken place in PA from 1740-1830 . Anyway each of the rifles I own are built in the variouse schools or styles I mention ! I would like to be less broad with the description of my Virginia rifle . But it was sold to me as that and the man I got it from knows his stuff so I did not push the issue .
