Got my 30" Pac-Nor a few weeks ago but just got around to shooting her today. I have been waiting on some Farrell rings but was told they're not even made yet and didn't want to wait another 3 weeks. So, I went ahead and remounted my Burris tactical rings until the Farrells arrive. Dave d, recommended virtually all my components. 70 grains of 2015 powder 195 gr Barnes X-pander bullet Harvester blue sabot Winchester 209 primers When I took my first shot at only 50 yards, I wasn't even on the target and thought my scope might be off. Then I shot the bottom of the target and found my bullet hole was way up there. Gave her 30 clicks down and about 12 to the right and she shot much better. After a few more clicks, I shot a final 3 shot group at 50 yards and then moved out to a hundred for a 3 shot group as it was getting too late to shoot anymore. Here's pics of the groups and a few of the rifle. The 50 yard group was good but I was excited at the 100 yard group and put the 3rd shot a bit lower than the first two. But, everything considered, and the fact that my original 50 caliber Savage barrel could only muster an 8" to 10" group, I'm pretty pleased to, at least, have a rifle I can hunt with ! I hope I can shoot even better next time out when I have more time. Big thanks to Dave d for recommending the loads for my new barrel ! It worked Dave; you were right !

Here's a vertical pic to give an idea how long the 30" barrel is.

That's wonderful shooting, Sag. Are you sure that vertical picture is just a 30" barrel? It looks at least four feet.

8-)I'm glad that everything is going your way. I don't have a doubt you will be getting what you like fron your rifle.
I wonder if you could time some loads. I'd be interested in what speeds you can get from that length barrel. The only other barrel I know of that length is Terry Krieb's Ruger #1 in 45 caliber. He tells me 2800fps with a load near that level is possible with the 200 grain SST.
One last thing who is that dave guy anyway? I keep hearing about him and some barrel he is supposed to make?

Thanks for the comments, guys. Harley, I see what you mean; it does look much longer than 30" in that pic. Rbinar, I plan on getting a Pact chronograph down the road to see how fast she is. Dave is good with barrels, no doubt !

Forgot to mention I ran a dry patch down the bore after each shot as it made loading the sabot easier and didn't hurt accuracy. I used my new 50" Tipton carbon cleaning rod with a .45 caliber Dewey bore guide. The Tipton is the best cleaning rod I have ever owned by far. Only read one bad review about them among the many great reviews. The Pac-Nor barrel bore looks incredible when held in the light and is smooth as silk when loading a sabot. One item that doesn't show well in the pics is my new tactical bolt knob I got from Kevin Rayhill. Feels wonderful in operation and is, imo, the most handsome accessory bolt available for Savage rifles.

Sag, what twist is your barrel?
Dave suggested I try those Barnes sometime, the 200gr XTP's have shot exceptionally well so far for me, makes for cheap practice.

Paul- Yaaaaahoooo!!! Thats got to be a good feeling after the groups you were originally shooting. I thought before your .50 barrel was just fine but you just couldn't shoot. ;D You had to prove me wrong! I should of figured with all that archery background!. Really Sag. I'm glad for you because I know what you went through. It had to be hard shooting those quail gun patterns. You might have had the worst shooting barrel on this board and then you start driving tacks the fist time out with the Pacnor. Got to love it. Hope your your Farrell rings come in soon!

Al, I'm embarrassed to say, I forgot what twist it is and can't find my paperwork. When I ordered the barrel, I told Penny to use whatever twist she thought best. I will try to find my papers on it and let you know.

Rex, I figured, you and others assumed I couldn't shoot. ;D That's one reason I defended how well my old Remington 700ML shot in a few of my posts in the past. My 700ML will shoot 1" to 1/2" groups all day. A few guys said my scope was probably broken but I felt it was fine. I think, the Pac-Nor groups prove it is ! If I'm on, I can shoot an NFAA 300 58X with my target bow. I leave the 60X scores to the professionals. Actually I shoot handguns better than anything and won a few bullseye matches back in my better days. Sorry, don't mean to brag but I needed to redeem myself after placing so much doubt in everyone's mind. ;D

Sag-Never doubted your shooting skills ! Many avenues when it comes to aiming may not be the exact same but it does go hand and hand.

Sag-Never doubted your shooting skills ! Many avenues when it comes to aiming may not be the exact same but it does go hand and hand. I know that, Rex. Just having some fun with it. Heck, I can't shoot compared to my mentor. (my uncle) He is a tremendous shot with a rifle. Wouldn't want to bet against Richard here on this board either ! So, Rex...when do we see your groups ? Oh, I forgot, you need some rings ! ;D

Paul=Now that you finally found a good load to shoot out of that thing the fun is probably over! Now what ,back to the .50 for something to do? I have some 2015 I might have to try. I would like to know how fast that 30inch Pacnor was flinging those Barnes. What a great way to start with the new barrel. I wanna see 200 yards now!

Rex, I'm really curious to see how fast she is too. Might have to order that Pact soon. I will shoot some 200 yard groups when my Farrell rings arrive. Gee, I hope, I don't jinx things by removing my Burris rings. What action would you recommend for the fifty ? ;D

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to shoot the deer. As long as that thing is a bayonet should work just as well.

Paul.........I'm glad you finally got a good shooting Savage. Richard Thanks, Rich. I'm sure, the fact that she has your superb bedding and pillar job didn't hurt a thing with the nice groups. I feel, if I do my part, she can shoot one hole groups at a hundred all day.

Sag-Didn't Richard do a different style bedding job on your rifle. I was thinking he might of used a bedding block. Probably a good idea with the long barrel.

Yes, Rich added a fairly thick aluminum bedding plate like he has on his rifle. I saw the pics of the one on Rich's rifle, thought it was cool, and asked him to add one for me. The bedding compound, in itself, is pretty stable but the plate doesn't hurt stability as it's far stronger than the wood it replaced. Will add pics of it next time I visit the range with my Farrell rings on board.
